The importance of preparing ahead

“Therefore be on alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. For this reason you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think he will.” Matthew 24:42-44

I don’t know about you, but I have enjoyed this winter. I am a snow lover. Our family enjoys getting out and sledding, having snow ball fights and building snow men. I get excited whenever I hear that there is a chance of snow in the forecast.

Now earlier this week the meteorologist were using the words that no one likes to hear. They were saying, “Ice,” “freezing rain.” “sleet” and “likely power outages.” This of course sent everyone into a shopping frenzy to get their supplies. We were fortunate that we had a few days notice of the coming weather. We had plenty of time to get prepared. But you know I was in a store the morning that the severe weather was about to hit and the store telephone was ringing nonstop. People were in a panic. “Do you have any kerosene heaters left?” It was the question of the day. The clerk told me that she thought the whole city of Henderson was looking for kerosene heaters that morning.

I can’t help but ask myself, why would anyone put off getting ready for the storm? The severe weather has been in the forecast for several days. If you know it is coming, why wait? Go ahead and get ready. Don’t get caught waiting too late.

This is what Jesus is talking about in these verses. He uses the illustration of a thief breaking in. He tells us that if you knew that your house was going to be broken into, you would be ready for it. You wouldn’t neglect being ready for a thief that you knew was on the way. You would make every preparation. Jesus then changes the focus to His return. Now we don’t know when it will be, but it is a guaranteed fact that He is returning. But too many people are treating His return like they were treating the winter weather. “Oh I will get ready later.”The problem is, later is too late. We don’t know when His return is. It could be before you finish reading your newspaper. It could still be years away. We don’t know. Go ahead and make your preparations now. Ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins. Tell Him that you believe in His death and resurrection and ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. It is simple to be ready for His return. Just don’t be like the people looking for the kerosene heaters and wait until it is too late.
