Those who seek God will find Him
Growing up we had a couple of great dogs, Scruffy and her son Roscoe.
My brother named Roscoe after Roscoe P. Coltrane from “The Dukes of Hazard”. So you know the time frame that I am talking about.
He wasn’t a bumbling character like the one on television, but he was a better detective than the Roscoe P. Coltrane in Hazard County. I can remember as a teenager I had decided that I wanted to start hunting. I would get home from school, get ready, head out the back door and walk to the woods.
The problem was Roscoe would always follow me. He would go and sit beneath my tree stand and then wander around the area that I was hunting, which meant that I would be wasting my time to continue to sit there. After a few failed attempts at going hunting, I came up with a plan. I would have someone feed the dogs at the back door and I would slip out of the basement door and go hunting. Yes, it meant that I had to do more walking to avoid Roscoe seeing me. But it was worth it if I could get into the woods alone.
This scene always ended the same way. At some point Roscoe would walk through the yard and cross over the path that I had walked. He would pick up my scent and walk straight to where I was in my stand. It may have taken him only a few minutes. It may have been an hour, but as soon as he smelled my path, he would come and find me. I could never hide from him .
On the bright side, I always felt safe while he was living, because if I was ever kidnapped, Roscoe would find me!
That memory reminds me of the fact that we can always find God too. No matter where sin may take us. He is there for us. No matter how far our lives may get off track, God is right there to bring us home and restore our relationship with Him. God has always been found by those that search for Him. As Jeremiah 29:13 says,“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all of your heart.”
Think about the Shepherd’s and Wise Men. They searched for and found Him. Remember when Joseph and Mary lost Jesus as a child. They back tracked and found Him in the Temple. Jesus can always be found by those that search for Him. All you need to do is to open your heart and pray. He is easy to find. He has never left.
Maybe that is, or should be, your New Year’s Resolution for 2014to find God and invite Him into your life. Or maybe it should be to find a closer relationship with Him. Don’t put it off. Search for Him and find the greatest joy that you can ever experience. He has always been right there. Just open your heart.
