Athena Nicole Duke weds Stephen Jamerson Crumpler

Athena Nicole Duke and Stephen Jamerson Crumpler of Henderson were united in marriage in a ceremony officiated by Dr. Ronald Steven Cava on July 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Henderson.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Allen Duke of Henderson. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude William Harrison of Henderson and the late Mr. Guilford Plummer Duke and the late Mr. and Mrs. Millard Allen Brummitt. She is a 2009 graduate of Northern Vance High School and a 2013 graduate of Appalachian State University. She is currently employed as a sales associate at The Blushing Bride/Merle Norman Cosmetics and as a teacher at Zeb Vance Elementary School.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Royal Crumpler of Henderson. He is the grandson of Ms. Laura King Smith and Mr. James Daily Overton of Henderson and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Dixon Crumpler. He is a 2010 graduate of Northern Vance High School and a 2013 graduate of Appalachian State University. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in philosophy and is currently employed as Sections Editor for the Daily Dispatch.

The bride was escorted by her father and was given in marriage by her parents. She wore a sleeveless white gown of satin, tulle and lace. The fitted bodice featured a V-neck and was adorned with crystal beading and sequins which extended into a full tulle skirt and a chapel-length train. Nestled in her hair, the bride wore a double-layer cathedral length veil of silk illusion. The bride wore her mother’s pearl necklace. She carried a bouquet of white roses, carnations and stephanotis surrounded by fresh greenery.

The matron of honor was Ingrid Duke Brown of Goldsboro, sister of the bride. The bridesmaids were Filippa Mackenzie Duke of Lawrence, Kansas, sister of the bride; Amber Elizabeth Grissom of Henderson, cousin of the groom; and Kasey Brooks Newman of Henderson, a friend of the bride.

The best man was Charles Royal Crumpler of Henderson, father of the groom. The groomsmen were Daniel J. Addington of Henderson, a friend of the groom; Jacob Adam Brown of Goldsboro, brother-in-law of the bride; and Andrew Garrett Crumpler, brother of the groom.

Howard Bass Grissom III and Danny Kay Reep, cousin and uncle of the groom, served as ushers. The flower girl was Eva Catherine Hopper of Henderson and the ring bearer was Noah Alan Bean of Henderson, both friends of the bride.

A program of wedding music was presented by Filippa Mackenzie Duke, organist, and Mark L. Hopper, organist and pianist. Scripture was read by the Rev. Douglas Allen Addington. Mrs. William Lewis Fleming Jr. served as wedding director. Hannah Yasmeen Shaabe served as register attendant and Calleigh Royal Crumpler and Courtney Allen Crumpler served as program attendants.

Following the ceremony, the reception was hosted by the bride’s parents in First Baptist Church’s Fellowship Hall. Greeters were Irving Gupton and Roberta Douglas. Nancy Bobbitt, Angie Brummitt, Lou Anne Crumpler, Angie Grissom, Dana Renn Reep and Sue Young were servers for the reception.

After a honeymoon trip to Bald Head Island, N.C., the couple now resides in Henderson.

Pre-wedding showers/events

A miscellaneous shower took place in the parlor of First Baptist Church on June 23 hosted by Nancy Bobbitt, Betty Boyd, Kathy Gay, Betty and Jim Goodwin, Jenny Hester, Tammy Hight, Nancy and Yancey Hines, Peggy Jackson, Andie Jackson, Jean Lark, Marietta and Richard Noel, Betsy Rublein, Sharon Stark and Anne Tucker, all friends of the couple.

A bridesmaid’s luncheon was hosted by Angie Brummitt and Anita Duke at Greenway’s Grill on July 19. The bride remembered her attendants with gifts at the event.

The rehearsal dinner took place on July 19 at the Henderson Country Club, hosted by the groom’s parents. The groom remembered his attendants with gifts at the event.
