Gillespie named Southeastern N.C. Teacher of the Year

Melissa Gillespie, formerly Melissa Dickerson of Kittrell, has been named as 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year for the southeast region of North Carolina.

She was also recently named as teacher of the year at her high school, Laney High in Wilmington, and as Teacher of the Year for New Hanover County.

To receive the award at her school, she was nominated by a peer and then won a staff vote.

For the county level, she wrote an essay and completed a portfolio and an interview.

For the regional level, she wrote an essay, completed a portfolio and had a visit and interview with the representatives the Department of Public Instruction. The representatives also conducted interviews with parents, students, staff and administration.

Gillespie is one of nine teachers who will compete for the N.C. Teacher of the Year award in June.

She graduated from Southern Vance High School in 1996 and then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a master’s degree from UNC Wilmington.

She is a former Miss Teen Henderson and Miss Henderson.
