Ribbon cutting — The New U with Shortcake, a home-based weight-loss supplement provider owned by Clareese Moss, will conduct a ribbon cutting today, 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce.

Rate hike hearing — A public hearing regarding Progress Energy’s rate increase request will be held in Raleigh today at 7 p.m. Call Georgia at (252) 430-8729 for information about carpooling.



Park and recreations — The Henderson-Vance Park & Recreations Commission will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at noon.

Community watch — A meeting of the Cobble Stone Community Watch Association will take place at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Temple Church, 90 S. Lake Lodge Road, today at 7 p.m.

Buddy orientation — The Miracle League of Franklin County, a baseball league for children with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities, will conduct buddy orientation class today in the media center at Royal Elementary School, 308 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, starting at 6:30 p.m. The class should run from 30-45 minutes. Topics of discussion will include expectations of buddies and players, “rules” of the game and “what if the player does this ... .” Buddy T-shirts will be on sale at $10 apiece.

Black caucus — The Henderson-Vance Black Caucus will meet today, at 6 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 326 W. Rock Spring St., Henderson. Members and supporters are urged to attend.

Community crime watch — The March 2013 Stratford Hills Community Crime Watch will meet today, at 7 p.m., at Western Vance High School. Lt. Lloyd Watkins, of the Vance County Sheriff’s Dept., will speak. All Stratford Hills residents are encouraged to attend.

Board of adjustment/planning board — The Vance County Board of Adjustment will meet today, at 4 p.m., in the Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting room, 122 Young St., Henderson. The Vance County Planning Board will convene at the conclusion of the board of adjustment meeting.



Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Allen de Hart Concert Series — “ABBA-Mania: An ABBA Tribute” will take place today at Louisburg College. All concert events in this series will take place in the Frances Boyette Dickson Auditorium in the college’s Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center. Depression in the elderly — An informational session concerning depression in the elderly will take place at Perry Memorial Library in Henderson today from 3:30-5 p.m. Information on differentiating between symptoms of mental illness and the effects of normal aging will be discussed. Hawkins alumni meeting — A general meeting of the  John R. Hawkins Alumni and Friends will be held today, at 10 a.m., in the Warren County Memorial Library Community Room. All members and friends are encouraged to attend and to bring at least one new member with them.

Tree giveaway — The Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office will be sponsoring its annual Tree Give Away today, at 9 a.m., at the Farmers’ Market at the Shannon Village Shopping Center in Louisburg. Trees will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. Bare root trees — including Crape Myrtle, Persimmon, Flowering Dogwood, White Oak, Willow Oak, Redbud and Southern Crabapple — will be available. Ribbon cutting — The Nail Spa, 700 Hillsboro St., Oxford, will conduct a ribbon cutting today at 2 p.m.



South Council — Bob’s Barbecue, 1589 N.C. 56, Creedmoor, will be the site for a meeting of the South Council today at noon. Faicia Elliott will present the program, an update on this year’s Granville County Relay for Life. A dutch treat lunch will be served.

Board of directors — The Vance Charter School Board of Directors will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the media center at the school.



Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch group will meet today, at 6;30 p.m., at West End Baptist Church. The speakers for the evening will be Bob and Sylvia Esquivel. They will discuss their recent trip to Belize.

Spaghetti supper — Boy Scout Troop No. 605 will conduct a spaghetti supper today, from 5-7:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church, 222 Young St., Henderson. Meals are $7 per plate. Proceeds will fund the troop’s summer camp trip to Virginia.


March 21

Public hearing — A public hearing will be conducted today, at 6 p.m., in the Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity  Administrative Building, 180 S. Beckford Drive, Henderson, by the Board of Directors. All interested citizens are invited to give their input in regards to the annual public housing plan at this time.


March 22

March 25

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Breastfeeding class — Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson will offer a free breastfeeding class today in the John T. Church Classroom of the hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Expectant moms are encouraged to attend and bring their support person. Classes are taught by a certified lactation consultant.
