Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Appearance commission — The Henderson Community Appearance Commission will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3 p.m.

Tax preparation — The Vance County Extension and Community Association Area meeting will take place today at the Vance County Extension Office, 305 Young St., Henderson, at 4 p.m. Annie Monroe, a tax preparer with Jackson Hewitt will give a presentation on Tax Preparation. Ritual training — Ritual training will be conducted the second Tuesday of each month, at 6:30 p.m., at Beacon Light Lodge No. 249. All master masons are cordially and fraternally invited to attend. Call (252) 767-3672 for more information.

Board of directors — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors will meet today, at 8 a.m., in the meeting room on the south campus of Vance-Granville Community College, 1547 South Campus Drive, Creedmoor.



Ribbon cutting — The New U with Shortcake, a home-based weight-loss supplement provider owned by Clareese Moss, will conduct a ribbon cutting today, 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce.

Rate hike hearing — A public hearing regarding Progress Energy’s rate increase request will be held in Raleigh today at 7 p.m. Call Georgia at (252) 430-8729 for information about carpooling.

Women in Business — A Women in Business program will be conducted by the Granville County Chamber of Commerce today, at noon, in the parish hall at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 140 College St., Oxford. Professional Specialty Pharmacy will present a program entitled “Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.” Lunch will be catered by Simply Delicious at $12 for chamber members and $15 for others: reservations are required.



Park and recreations — The Henderson-Vance Park & Recreations Commission will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at noon.

Community watch — A meeting of the Cobble Stone Community Watch Association will take place at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Temple Church, 90 S. Lake Lodge Road, today at 7 p.m.

Buddy orientation — The Miracle League of Franklin County, a baseball league for children with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities, will conduct buddy orientation class today in the media center at Royal Elementary School, 308 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, starting at 6:30 p.m. The class should run from 30-45 minutes. Topics of discussion will include expectations of buddies and players, “rules” of the game and “what if the player does this ... .” Buddy T-shirts will be on sale at $10 apiece.

Black caucus — The Henderson-Vance Black Caucus will meet today, at 6 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, 326 W. Rock Spring St., Henderson. Members and supporters are urged to attend.

Community crime watch — The March 2013 Stratford Hills Community Crime Watch will meet today, at 7 p.m., at Western Vance High School. Lt. Lloyd Watkins, of the Vance County Sheriff’s Dept., will speak. All Stratford Hills residents are encouraged to attend.

Board of adjustment/planning board — The Vance County Board of Adjustment will meet today, at 4 p.m., in the Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting room, 122 Young St., Henderson. The Vance County Planning Board will convene at the conclusion of the board of adjustment meeting.



Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Allen de Hart Concert Series — “ABBA-Mania: An ABBA Tribute” will take place today at Louisburg College. All concert events in this series will take place in the Frances Boyette Dickson Auditorium in the college’s Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center. The box office, located in the main lobby of the center, is open Monday-Friday, from 1-5 p.m., as well as one-and-a-half hours before show time. Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.


March 25

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Breastfeeding class — Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson will offer a free breastfeeding class today in the John T. Church Classroom of the hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Expectant moms are encouraged to attend and bring their support person. Classes are taught by a certified lactation consultant. Call (252) 436-1881 to register. There will be no charge for this class.
