Theater trip deadline — Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is sponsoring a trip to the Barn Theatre in Greensboro for “The Color Purple ... the Musical” on April 6 at 6 p.m. Today is the sign-up deadline. The cost, $68 per person, includes dinner, the show, gratuity and transportation. Sign-up deadline — The House Committee on Elections will conduct a public hearing concerning voter ID on March 12, at 4 p.m. It will take place in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building, 300 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh. The public is invited to attend and make comments. Speaker slots are limited: each speaker will have up to 3 minutes for presentation. Search and sign up no later than 5 p.m. today.

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Library board of trustees — The Perry Memorial Library Board of Trustees will conduct a meeting in the library board room today at 5 p.m.

City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a regular meeting today, at 6 p.m., in the city council chambers.

Quilting club — The March meeting of Vance Quilts R Us will take place today, at 6 p.m., in the dining room of Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. Members will be celebrating the Green – Attendees are encouraged to come out to view the Shamrock Quilt Blocks and to enter a drawing (25 cents per entry) to receive a bag of them. Everyone is welcome.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the North Carolina History Room at Perry Memorial Library. Larry Leach, society member will present a program on the Marrow/Burwell families. All members and interested persons are encouraged to attend.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the Administrative Services Center Board Room, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson.

Beekeepers club — The Kerr/ Tar Beekeepers Club will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the upstairs conference room at the Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, 305 Young St., Henderson. Basic computer skills — Laura Peace will give a free presentation today, from 9 a.m.-noon, for small business owners concerning basic computer skills necessary to locate and store computer files. It will take place in Room 7100 of Bldg. 7 (the small business center) at Vance-Granville Community College, 200 Community College, Henderson. Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Appearance commission — The Henderson Community Appearance Commission will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3 p.m.

Tax preparation — The Vance County Extension and Community Association Area meeting will take place today at the Vance County Extension Office, 305 Young St., Henderson, at 4 p.m. Annie Monroe, a tax preparer with Jackson Hewitt will give a presentation on Tax Preparation. Ribbon cutting — The New U with Shortcake, a home-based weight-loss supplement provider owned by Clareese Moss, will conduct a ribbon cutting today, 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce.

Rate hike hearing — A public hearing regarding Progress Energy’s rate increase request will be held in Raleigh today at 7 p.m. Call Georgia at (252) 430-8729 for information about carpooling.



Park and recreations — The Henderson-Vance Park & Recreations Commission will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at noon.

Community watch — A meeting of the Cobble Stone Community Watch Association will take place at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Temple Church, 90 S. Lake Lodge Road, today at 7 p.m.



Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.


March 19

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.
