Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Boy Scout open house — Boy Scout Troop No. 620 will conduct an open house/organization meeting today, from 10 a.m.-noon, in the basement of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 Chestnut St., Henderson. Alumni meeting — The Granville, Vance, Warren Alumni Chapter of Shaw University will meet today, at 11 a.m., 230 Deer Trail, Henderson. Attendees will discus fundraising for scholarships and support for their alma mater. All area alumni and students are welcome to attend the meeting. Concert event — The Musicians Artists Network will be hosting its second annual March Music Madness today, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Becker Village Mall, Roanoke Rapids. Yard sale — A yard sale will take place today, starting at 6 a.m.-until, adjacent to EZ Car Care (at the old Henderson Mall) on Dabney Drive. All proceeds will go toward the Boys United ‘00 - Myrtle Beach Youth Soccer Tournament. Items for sale will include furniture, sports equipment, adult and children’s clothing, books, console games, household items, luggage, TVs, lawn mowers and more.



Planning board — The City of Henderson Planning Board will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3:30 p.m.

Closing — The Granville County Library System will be closing all of its branches today in order to conduct mandatory staff training. Regular operating hours will resume Tuesday for all branches. Customers needing to return books and materials today may still do so by using the outside book drops.

Board of education — The Granville County Board of Education will meet in regular session today, at 6 p.m., the Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delacroix St., Oxford. Citizens interested in addressing the board may do so by signing up prior to the meeting. Each person will be limited to no more than five minutes; a maximum of 30 minutes will be allocated to this portion of the meeting.



Board of elections — The Vance County Board of Elections will meet today, at 4 p.m., at the Vance County Board of Elections office, located in the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St., Henderson.

Convention meeting  — The Vance County Republican Party has scheduled its annual pre-State Republican Party Convention meeting for today, at 6:30 p.m., in the Commissioners Room on the second floor (accessible through the Young Street entrance) of the Old Vance County Courthouse.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education will conduct a personnel committee meeting today, at 8:30 a.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room.

Zoning board — The City of Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustments will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3:30 p.m.

Alumni association — The Fayetteville State University Vance County Alumni Association will be holding a parent informational session today, at 6:30 p.m., in the board room at Perry Memorial Library in Henderson. All participants in the Annual Tot & Teen Pageant and any persons ages 4-19 interested in participating are encouraged to attend.



Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.



Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Talent show — The Granville Central High School Parent-Teacher Organization is sponsoring the “GCHS Got Talent” talent show today, starting at 7 p.m. Pizza, candy and beverages will be on sale. Admission is $5 per person.

Meal/silent auction — The seventh annual Soup-er Silent Auction to benefit Relay for Life will take place today, from 5:30-8 p.m., in the fellowship hall at Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson. The public is invited to attend. In addition to the auction, this event will include a “Dine for a Donation” buffet style meal. All donations will be tax deductible.


March 11

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Library board of trustees — The Perry Memorial Library Board of Trustees will conduct a meeting in the library board room today at 5 p.m.

City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a regular meeting today, at 6 p.m., in the city council chambers.


March 12

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Appearance commission — The Henderson Community Appearance Commission will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3 p.m.

Park and recreations — The Henderson-Vance Park & Recreations Commission will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at noon.
