Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. Janice Satterwhite, diabetes educator at the hospital, will speak on the topic of “Love Your Heart, Eat Smart.” Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. Black History program — A Black History program will take place today, starting at 6 p.m., in the auditorium at Henderson Middle School. The public is invited to attend.



Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every second and fourth Thursday at Spiritual Connections Café, 221 S. Garnett St., Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Watercolor workshop — Billy Farmer will conduct a watercolor workshop today, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Mitchell Media Center, 102 Dogwood Drive, Louisburg. The fee will be $15 for council members and $20 for all others. Participants will need to bring watercolor paints, including ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow and sap green; round brushes No. 8, 12 and 14; and 140 lb. watercolor paper. Business expo — Small Business and Industry Appreciation Day will take place at 4185 U.S. 15 South, Oxford, from 4-6 p.m. Representatives from various organizations are welcome to come and share information and opportunities that are available to assist local businesses and industries in Granville County.

Black History event — The 11th annual Black History Month Salute will take place today, at 6 p.m., at the Warren County Middle School gymnasium in Warrenton. This year’s theme is “Celebrating African-American Achievement.” The keynote speaker for this event will be Corey Jennings, special counsel to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of International Corporate Finance.



Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Scholarship application deadline — Today is the deadline for the submission of 2013 N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs competitive scholarship applications (for Class II and III). Applications must be in the director’s office; postmarked by the United States Postal Service, UPS or Federal Express; or delivered to the Raleigh office in person. Contact Sandra R. Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Boy Scout open house — Boy Scout Troop No. 620 will conduct an open house/organization meeting today, from 10 a.m.-noon, in the basement of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 Chestnut St., Henderson. Alumni meeting — The Granville, Vance, Warren Alumni Chapter of Shaw University will meet today, at 11 a.m., 230 Deer Trail, Henderson. Attendees will discus fundraising for scholarships and support for their alma mater. All area alumni and students are welcome to attend the meeting. Concert event — The Musicians Artists Network will be hosting its second annual March Music Madness today, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Becker Village Mall, Roanoke Rapids. Board of elections — The Vance County Board of Elections will meet today, at 4 p.m., at the Vance County Board of Elections office, located in the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St., Henderson.


March 7

Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.


March 8

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Talent show — The Granville Central High School Parent-Teacher Organization is sponsoring the “GCHS Got Talent” talent show today, starting at 7 p.m. Pizza, candy and beverages will be on sale. Admission is $5 per person.

Meal/silent auction — The seventh annual Soup-er Silent Auction to benefit Relay for Life will take place today, from 5:30-8 p.m., in the fellowship hall at Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson. The public is invited to attend. In addition to the auction, this event will include a “Dine for a Donation” buffet style meal. All donations will be tax deductible.


March 11

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.


March 12

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton.
