Today

Rescheduled — Due to a scheduling conflict, the Granville Health System Board of Trustees meeting originally scheduled for Feb. 25 has been moved to today. The time (5 p.m.) and place (the Granville Medical Center classroom) remained unchanged.

Pancake supper –– A pancake supper will be served in the Kerr-Vance Academy cafeteria today, from 5:15-7 p.m. Tickets will be available from members of the Henderson Rotary Club (which is sponsoring this event) or at the door. Eat-in or take-out will be available for a $6 donation.

NAACP — The Vance County Regular NAACP will meet today, at 7 p.m., at Gateway Community Development Center, 314 S. Garnett St., Henderson. A youth session will take place from 6-6:45 p.m.

Chamber of commerce — The next chamber lunch for the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce will take place today, from noon-1 p.m., at Chef’s Korner in Ebony, Va. The purpose of this event is to showcase member businesses. A discussion of necessary programs and support for chamber members will follow. Black History program — Kittrell Job Corps Center will host a Black History Month Program in the center gymnasium today at 3 p.m. Carol A. Dorsey, human resources director and safety officer for the City of Oxford, will be the guest speaker. Chamber orientation — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce will host a new member orientation meeting today, at 5:30 p.m., in the chamber boardroom, 124 Hillsboro St., Oxford. Mike McConchie will present a program that highlights the benefits of being a chamber member. New and old members who want updates on their benefits are encouraged to attend.

Community-wide safety — School administrators, students and area residents have been invited to attend a community-wide safety meeting today, at 7 p.m., in the school auditorium at E.M. Rollins Elementary School in Henderson. Residents interested in increasing community safety and protecting county youth should attend. Those who wish to speak to the audience are asked to prepare written statements.

Black History month — Bright Star Theater will present “Aesop’s Fables” today, at 5 p.m. at Warren County Memorial Library, 119 S. Front St., Warrenton. This program is suitable for the entire family.

 

Wednesday

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. Janice Satterwhite, diabetes educator at the hospital, will speak on the topic of “Love Your Heart, Eat Smart.” Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. Thursday

Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every second and fourth Thursday at Spiritual Connections Café, 221 S. Garnett St., Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Watercolor workshop — Billy Farmer will conduct a watercolor workshop today, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Mitchell Media Center, 102 Dogwood Drive, Louisburg. The fee will be $15 for council members and $20 for all others. Participants will need to bring watercolor paints, including ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow and sap green; round brushes No. 8, 12 and 14; and 140 lb. watercolor paper. Business expo — Small Business and Industry Appreciation Day will take place at 4185 U.S. 15 South, Oxford, from 4-6 p.m. Representatives from various organizations are welcome to come and share information and opportunities that are available to assist local businesses and industries in Granville County.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Scholarship application deadline — Today is the deadline for the submission of 2013 N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs competitive scholarship applications (for Class II and III). Applications must be in the director’s office; postmarked by the United States Postal Service, UPS or Federal Express; or delivered to the Raleigh office in person. Contact Sandra R. Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Boy Scout open house — Boy Scout Troop No. 620 will conduct an open house/organization meeting today, from 10 a.m.-noon, in the basement of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 Chestnut St., Henderson. Alumni meeting — The Granville, Vance, Warren Alumni Chapter of Shaw University will meet today, at 11 a.m., 230 Deer Trail, Henderson. Attendees will discus fundraising for scholarships and support for their alma mater. All area alumni and students are welcome to attend the meeting. Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.

 

March 8

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.
