Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Black History event — The Vance County Arts Council will celebrate Black History today, at 6 p.m., at Emrose Gallery, 233 S. Garnett St., Henderson. Dr. David E. Alston, an author and a descendant of Harriet Tubman, will be in attendance. Musical groups will be on hand. Prizes will be given out for a Black History trivia contest.

Organ benefit program — A benefit program to provide a kidney to an anonymous recipient will take place today at Vance-Granville Community College, 200 Community College Road, Henderson, in the civic center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with the program commencing at 7 p.m. Several gospel groups will be appearing, including national recording artists Gerald Hinton and Coco McMillan. Free clothing — A free clothing give-away will take place today, from 7 a.m.-noon, at Harriett Baptist Church, 935 S. Carolina Ave., Henderson.

Black History Month — Thomas Parks will lead a discussion entitled “Poetic Voices of Jazz: A Tribute to Jazz Musicians” today at Warren County Memorial Library, 119 S. Front St., Warrenton. Call (252) 257-4990 for more information.

Improvisation/comedy/dinner — Tonight is Improv Night at Lakeland Theatre Company. Attendees will enjoy an evening of improvisation, comedy and dinner when the Curtain Call Cabaret is converted to a Comedy Dinner Club. American Legion — American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 425 will host its annual fundraiser dance today, from 8 p.m.- until 1 a.m., at The American Legion Post No. 425, at 340 Weavers Chapel Road, Littleton. Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every Monday at Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a meeting, followed by a work session, in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 6 p.m.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Rescheduled — Due to a scheduling conflict, the Granville Health System Board of Trustees meeting originally scheduled for Feb. 25 has been moved to today. The time (5 p.m.) and place (the Granville Medical Center classroom) remained unchanged.

Pancake supper –– A pancake supper will be served in the Kerr-Vance Academy cafeteria today, from 5:15-7 p.m. Tickets will be available from members of the Henderson Rotary Club (which is sponsoring this event) or at the door. Eat-in or take-out will be available for a $6 donation.

NAACP — The Vance County Regular NAACP will meet today, at 7 p.m., at Gateway Community Development Center, 314 S. Garnett St., Henderson. A youth session will take place from 6-6:45 p.m.

 

Wednesday

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. Janice Satterwhite, diabetes educator at the hospital, will speak on the topic of “Love Your Heart, Eat Smart.” Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend.
