Today

Valentine’s Day social — An Afternoon of Jazz Valentine’s Day Social will be hosted by Henderson Institute Historical Museum, 629 W. Rockspring St., Henderson, today, from 5-7 p.m. The Just Friends Jazz Sextet will perform. Donations of $15 are requested. For more information, call (2520 430-0616.

Alumni meeting — The Executive Board of John R. Hawkins Alumni and Friends, Inc., will meet today, at 10 a.m., in the Warren County Memorial Library community room.

Genealogy presentation — Local author Jane Ball-Groom will discuss the two years she spent tracing her mother’s maternal ancestry today, at noon, at Warren County Memorial Library, 119 S. Front St., Warrenton. Her research led to her publishing a novel about her mother’s maternal family, “And Yet Another Day, Journey of my Soul.” For more information, call (252) 257-4990.

Country & Western fun night — The House of Prayer, VA 58 in Buffalo Junction, Va., will host a Country & Western Valentine fun night for couples today, at 6 p.m. For $25 per couple, attendees can expect a barbecue and chicken buffet, dancing, door prizes and games. Presentation on Blackbeard — A dual presentation is scheduled at the Harris Exhibit Hall, 110 Court St., Oxford, today, at 2 p.m. Claire Ramsey will dress up as Capt. Jack Sparrow and tell stories of Blackbeard. Author, historian and filmmaker Kevin Duffus will review his book, “The Last Days of Black Beard,” along with a multi media presentation. Copies will be available for sale and signing. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, students and Granville County Historical Society members. Tickets may be purchased at the hall up until the day of the event.

Commissioners’ retreat — The Granville County Board of Commissioners will resume its retreat today, at 8:30 a.m., at the Granville Expo & Convention Center.

Ridgeway Opry House — There will be a special guest appearance by Second Fret. Also scheduled to perform are Freida Harlow, Ellen Lloyd, Joyce Hart, Alan and Betsy Reid, Julia Morton, Donnie Gillam, Matt Nelson, Evelena Norwood, Jimmy Bridges, Sam Anderson, Richard Minor, Johnny Pitchford, Jackie Turner, Kim Phillips, Earl West, John White and Doug Branch. Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every Monday at Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Tuesday

Community watch — The West End Community Watch group will meeting today, 6:30 p.m., at West End Baptist Church. Chad Coffey, a conceal and carry instructor, will talk about firearm safety in the home. Anny interested citizens are welcome to attend.

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Business seminar — The small business center at Vance-Granville Community College will conduct a seminar entitled “What every Business Owner needs to know about Taxes and Workers’ Compensation Insurance” today, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., on the main campus in Vance County, in Building 7, Room 7107. Poems and paintings, paired — The Warren County Artists Market will host “A Gathering of Artists & Poets’ Reception” today, from 5-6:30 p.m. This event is an opening show of original paintings, with poems written about them, read by the poets. The art and poetry will be exhibited in the library until March 19, 2013.

Healthcare reform forum — The Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a health care reform forum today, from 7:30-9 a.m., in the alumni room at Louisburg College. Marci Wilding, director of government relations at Novant Health, and Mike Smith, Blue Cross and Blue Shield regional sales executive, will discuss Obamacare. Breakfast will be served.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogy Society 1881 will be holding its monthly meeting today at Perry Memorial Library. The program will be “The Dukes of Epsom,” presented by Joyce Duke. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. All members and guests are invited to attend.

Board of elections — The Vance County Board of Elections will meet on today, at 4:30 p.m., in the Board of Elections office, located in the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St., Henderson.

Bookeeping seminar — Today, from 6-9 p.m., Jess McLamb (instructor) will present a free seminar called “Basics of Bookeeping” in Room 7107 of Bldg. 7 at Vance-Granville Community College, 200 Community College, Henderson.

 

Thursday

Human relations — The Human Relations Commission will meet at the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 7 p.m.

Planning for class reunion — Members of the J.F. Webb High School Class of 1973 have organized a planning committee for its 40th class reunion. The committee will meet in the conference room at Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford today at 6 p.m. All classmates are invited to attend.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a meeting, followed by a work session, in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 6 p.m.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

Feb. 26

Rescheduled — Due to a scheduling conflict, the Granville Health System Board of Trustees meeting originally scheduled for Feb. 25 has been moved to today. The time (5 p.m.) and place (the Granville Medical Center classroom) remained unchanged.

 

Feb. 27

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. Janice Satterwhite, diabetes educator at the hospital, will speak on the topic of “Love Your Heart, Eat Smart.” Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend.
