Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Art Camp — registration for a beginner’s art camp hosted by Hill’s Music Shoppe ends today. The camp is for children grades 1-4 and lasts from 10 a.m. to noon on July 22-26. Maria Parham — Maria Parham Medical Center is hosting a free lunch and learn program at 11:30 a.m. in the hospital classroom. Gary Smith, MD, primary care practitioner with Four County Primary Care, will be presenting on how to stay healthy during the summer, including tips on proper hydratioin, sun protection and heat safety starting at noon. Beacon Light Lodge 249 — Beacon Light Lodge 249, 1204 W. Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10 a.m.-noon, Introduction to Art (ages 5-8); and 1-3 p.m., Beginning Piano (ages 6-12). Camps will cost $60 per student, per week. Perry Memorial Library — The Perry Memorial Library will host a presentation from noon to 1:30 p.m. themed “identifying adolescent substance use and effectively involving parents.” The speaker will be Anna Godwin, MS, LCAS, coordinator of the North Carolina Parent Resource Center. Attendees will learn to spot symptons of drug use in adolescents and teach parents about their role in substance abuse prevention. You may bring lunch for the event. Registration is required.

Expungements and Certificates of Relief Clinic – A clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library that will

provide general information about barriers to employment and benefits that arise when a person has a criminal record. Legal Aid advocates will work with individuals after the presentation. The free clinic is co-sponsored by the Henderson Human Relations Commission and Greater Little Zion Holy Church and is open to the public. No registration is required.

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Humane Society — The Humane society of Granville County will host a microchip clinic from 9 a.m. to noon at Southern States in Oxford. Microchips are $20 each and a lifetime registration is included.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Aug. 1

Cancellation — The Henderson Shrine Club normally conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. However, due to a joint meeting with the Oxford Shrine Club, this meeting will not take place this month.

Nomination period ends — Local farmers and ranchers have until the close of business to submit nominations for Vance-Warren County Farm Service Agency county committee seats. The nomination form, FSA-669A, along with other information concerning the elections may be obtained at fsa.usda.gov/elections. Forms must be postmarked or dropped off at the Vance-Warren County U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center.
