Today

Children’s program — Today, at 2:30 p.m., a free program with a ranger, “Who Needs a Seed?”, will take place at Joseph S. J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, 5164 Buggs Island Road, Boydton, Va. Attendees will learn why seeds are so important and how they work. They will also have the opportunity to make their very own Basil seed starter necklace to take home. Admission to the center and all park programs are free; the park will be open on Sundays, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Lakeland Theatre Company — “Anne of Green Gables” will be presented today, at 2:30 p.m., Lakeland Cultural Arts Center in Littleton. Music recital — “Music With Strings,” a free recital of classical and sacred music, will be presented today, at 3 p.m., at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 210 N. Main St., Warrenton. The public is invited to attend this free recital. A reception will follow at the Mary Burwell Allen Parsonage.

Chorale (Henderson) — The Northeast Piedmont Chorale will present “American Spring” today, at 2 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 222 Young St., Henderson. This will be followed at 6 p.m. by a concert at Maple Springs Baptist Church, 1938 N.C. 56 East, Louisburg. The program encompasses music by American composers from the 18th century to the present. This concert is free but donations will be accepted.

Monday

Board of trustees (rescheduled) — Originally slated for April 22, the Granville Health System Board of Trustees meeting will now take place today, at 5 p.m., in the classroom at Granville Medical Center, 1016 College St., Oxford.

Re-opening (after relocation) — The Oxford Employment Service Office (formerly the Employment Security Commission) has moved from its previous location. It will re-open today at 111 Hilltop Village, Oxford, beside Food Lion in the Hilltop Shopping Center.

Ribbon cutting — Rachel Schneider will conduct a ribbon cutting today, at 9 a.m., at 9 Forward, 144 Hillsboro St., Oxford.

Ribbon cutting — Teresa and Jimmy Walker will conduct a ribbon cutting today, at 10 a.m., at Lighthouse Creations Floral Designs & Gifts, 107-B West C St., Butner.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education has scheduled a called meeting today, at 5:30 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at the Administrative Services Center, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson.

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Copyright seminar — A free seminar on copyrights, trademarks and patents, “Basics of Copyrights, Trademarks & Patents,” will be offered through the small business center at Vance-Granville Community College on today, from 6-8 p.m, at the Franklin County Campus on N.C. 56 near Louisburg. Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education has scheduled a meeting of the community relations committee today, at 5:30 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at the Administrative Services Center, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson.

NAACP — The Vance County NAACP will have its monthly meeting today, at 7 p.m., at Gateway Community Development Center, 314 S. Garnett St., Henderson. The youth department will meet beforehand, from 6-6:45 p.m.

 

Wednesday

Cancellation (ribbon cutting) — The ribbon cutting schedule today, at 10 a.m., for Hillsboro St. Cleaners & Formal Wear, 700 C Hillsboro St., Oxford, has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

Lake Gaston Association — Today, at 9:30 a.m., boating safety will be discussed during then next meeting of the Lake Gaston Association at Lake Gaston Baptist Church, N.C. 903, 1 mile north of Eaton Ferry Bridge, across from the Subway Restaurant. Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post No. 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Earth roast — The Stem Ruritan Club’s Earth Roast will take place today. The day before, 1,200 lbs. of beef will be placed in the ground to cook. Meat will be served on the day of the event from 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m. (or until). The Ruritan club is located on Old N.C.75 in Stem.

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.
