Today

Weigh-ins — Granville-Vance Weight Loss Challenge weigh-ins will continue today at South Granville Medical Center. They will be conducted by the Granville County Health Dept. This is Day Four of a five-day event.

Graduation — The Kittrell Job Corps Center graduation will be held on today, from 2-3 p.m. in the center gym. Brenda Peace-Jenkins, Henderson councilwoman, will be the guest speaker. Weed control — The Lake Gaston Weed Control Council will meet today, at 7 p.m., at the Calvary United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 136 Calvary Church Road, Littleton.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Kittrell Job Corps Center — Today, Kittrell Job Corps Center, along with employers and students from across the country, will take part in Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Student “shadows” will be paired with “workplace mentors” in an effort introduce students to the workplace and help them understand how academics and careers are connected. The center will join national event sponsors and students, businesses and community members in the Vance County area in providing valuable workplace experience to students.

Poetry reading –– Warren FoodWorks, 108 S. Main St., Warrenton, will be conducting a poetry reading and open mic today, from 7-9 p.m., presented by Thomas Park and the Warren County Artists’ Market. Featured poets for this event will be Arlene Bice and Ron Parker.

 

Saturday

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m., at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Alumni meeting — The Granville, Vance, Warren Alumni Chapter of Shaw University will meet today at 11 a.m. The meeting will be held at 230 Deer Trail Lane, in Henderson. Members will discuss fundraising for scholarships and supporting their alma mater. All area Shaw University alumni and students are welcome to attend. TRIAD — The TRIAD Chapter will hold its regular meeting at the Henderson Institute Museum on Rock Spring Street, Henderson, today, at 11 a.m. Suggestions and ideas for spring and summer fundraising activities will be discussed (and voted on), as well as other matters of importance. All members and friends are urged to attend and reminded to bring a new member.

 

Sunday

Photographers guild — The Franklin County Arts Council will meet today at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn at 2 p.m. This month’s challenge is to photograph a self portrait showing one’s camera.

 

Monday

Planning board — The Henderson Planning Board will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday

Zoning board of adjustments — The Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustments will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers at 3:30 p.m.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education committee on personnel will meet in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at 8:30 a.m.

Fruit tree pruning — Warren County Cooperative Extension will conduct a fruit tree pruning workshop today, 10:30 a.m., at a local home orchard between Warrenton and Henderson. The basics of pruning — all the major fruit crops, including apples, peaches, blueberries, figs, and more — will be covered. This workshop will be free, but attendees must register via telephone at (252) 257-3640 or e-mail paul_mckenzie@ncsu.edu. Directions will be provided upon registration. In the event of inclement weather, the workshop will be held indoors at the Warren County Extension Center, 158 Rafters Lane in Warrenton.

Lunch and Learn — The February session for Lunch and Learn will take place at noon. Mike McConchie will host the meeting at in the Granville County Chamber of Commerce Chamber Boardroom,124 Hillsboro St., Oxford.  The topic will be “5 Proven Ways to Increase Profits!” Attendees should bring a bag lunch.

Feb. 12

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton.
