Today

Blood drive — The American Red Cross, will be conducting a blood donation drive today at St. James Church, 3275 U.S. 158 Bypass. The drive will last from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Appointments to donate can be arranged by calling Rick Seekins at (252) 438-8712.

Fundraiser — Barbecue plates will be sold for $7 each at The Country Lounge & Grill, 823 Youngsville Blvd. South, Wake Forest, today at 4 p.m. Attendees will also enjoy live music and a raffle. Plates will include barbecue, potatoes, slaw and bread. Proceeds will go to The Family Corner convenience store, 2020 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, which was robbed on Jan. 1. Abstinence program — Trained facilitators will be available today, at 9 a.m., at Vance County Learning Center, 317 S. Garnett St., Henderson, to talk to young people (ages 13-19) about sex and the risks involved with sexual activity at a young age. Call (252) 438-6900 or 432-4117.

Royal Palace Theatre — Blues singer/guitarist Theodis Ealey, along with Soul and R&B artists Lacee and Lebrado, will be performing today, starting at 8 p.m., at  Royal Palace Theatre, 500 Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids. SPCA meeting — A meeting will take place at Youngsville Library, 218 U.S. 1A, Youngsville, today, at 1 p.m., to determine whether or not the SPCA of Franklin County remains in operation. The public is encouraged to attend and provide input.

Closing — Vance-Granville Community College closed all four campuses at noon on Friday due to projected inclement weather. They will remain closed throughout the weekend.

 

Sunday

Royal Palace Theatre — Gospel Music Association Dove-winning group, The Isaacs, will be performing today, at 6 p.m., at Royal Palace Theatre, 500 Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids. In addition, combo series tickets may be purchased for only $5: these will include performances by The McKameys on April 5 and Jason Crabb on May 18.

Monday

Granville Health System — The board of trustees will conduct a meeting at 5 p.m. in the classroom.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every Monday at Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. City council — The Henderson City Council will hold a meeting in the Henderson City Council Chambers at 6 p.m., followed by a work session.

Chamber banquet — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its 71st annual membership banquet for today at 6:30 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center on the main campus in Henderson. There will be a pre-event performance from bluegrass and gospel group, the Kudzu Ramblers. Dr. Holiday, “The Humorous Hypnotist,” will be the guest speaker and provide entertainment. Artist grant workshop — The 2014 Regional Artist Program Grant Workshop will take place at the Franklinton Library, 9 W. Mason St., Franklinton, today, from 3-4 p.m. The grant ($200-$,1500) is designed to support art projects that will advance the applicant’s career in demonstrable ways. NAACP — The Vance County NAACP will meet today, at 7 p.m., at the Gateway Community Center. Youth will meet at 6-6:45 p.m.

 

Wednesday

Granville Health System — The physician recruitment committee has scheduled a meeting for 6 p.m. in the board room.

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. The group is continuing to follow the National Stroke Association Discovery Circles program. Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. This month’s topic will be “Staying Fit in 2013: Exercising and Preventing Further Strokes.” There is no charge for this group. Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday, starting at 5:30 p.m., at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Fruit tree pruning — Warren County Cooperative Extension will conduct a fruit tree pruning workshop today at a local home orchard between Warrenton and Henderson. The basics of pruning — all the major fruit crops, including apples, peaches, blueberries, figs, and more — will be covered.
