Today

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Father/daughter event — Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc., and the Vance Family Resource Center invite fathers (and father figures) to a Daddy & Daughter Date Night. At this event, fathers will treat their daughters to an evening of dinner, dancing and fun from 6-8 p.m. This event is free, but reservations are required. Blood drive — An American Red Cross blood drive will take place from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in the hospital classroom on the lower level of the John T. Church Building at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. The hospital is encouraging donors to make appointments. Ribbon cutting — A ribbon cutting will be conducted for Yancey Washington, Attorney At Law, 104 Court St., Oxford, at 10 a.m.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Farmers market — The Vance County Farmers Market, located at the Henderson City Operations Center, 900 S. Beckford Drive, will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon. For more information and to register as a vendor, contact Wayne Rowland at (252) 438-8188.

Ridgeway Opry House — There will be a special guest appearance by Bill Jones. Estate planning — St. James Missionary Baptist Church is hosting a free workshop related to administrative activities for families dealing with death at 11:30 a.m. As the facilitator, the Rev. Monday

Sewing camp (second session) — Carol Montague will conduct week-long sewing camps at her home near Tar River Road and N.C. 15 south of Oxford, today- June 28, from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m daily. Children (8+ years of age) may participate even without prior sewing experience. Registration ($25 total fee) will be on a first-come, first serve basis. Call Montague at (919) 603-1921.

Imagination Art Station — Local students will have an opportunity to learn various arts and crafts when Imagination Art Station 2013 starts up today. Cancellation — The Granville Health System Board of Trustees meeting has been cancelled.

Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10-11:30 a.m., Music, Movement & Crafts (ages 2-5); 10 a.m.-noon, Art: Drawing and Painting (ages 9-14); 1-3 p.m., Intermediate Piano (ages 8-13); 1-3 p.m., Beginning Band (ages 9-12). Tuesday

Information session — The Vance County School System will offer a fire/public safety academy at Southern Vance High School, starting in the fall. An information session for students and parents will take place at the school at 6 p.m.

NAACP — The Vance County Branch of the NAACP will conduct its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Community Development Center on Garnett Street in Henderson.

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Veterans symposium — The civic center at Vance-Granville Community College’s main campus, 200 Community College Road, Henderson, will be the site for the Female Veterans Symposium 2013 “Care After Trauma” from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Veterans from Franklin, Vance, Warren and Granville counties are encouraged to attend this free event. All attendees should bring their DD-214, discharge papers and resumes to the event. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Board of education — The Granville County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delacroix St., Oxford, to close out the fiscal year. A brief closed session for personnel/attorney-client privilege will follow.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Dedication — The Franklin County Arts Council will dedicate the Quilt Trails of the Tar River at the Bunn Depot on Railroad Street in Bunn in conjunction with the town’s centennial celebration. The festivities will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with the official ribbon cutting taking place at 11 a.m. Activities will include: a quilting bee, a corn hole tournament, sack races, a tug of war and other games, music, food, arts and crafts vendors. Bluegrass musicians are invited to perform.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson.
