Sidewalk dedication — Creedmoor’s Sidewalk Dedication, which will mark the completion of a sidewalk connecting elementary and high schools, will take place at 10 a.m. at the Creedmoor Gym, 108 E. Wilton Ave., Creedmoor.

 

Thursday

Canning/freezing workshops — The Can It & Freeze It Workshops will be held June 18 and 25, from 6-8:15 p.m., at the Granville County Extension Center. Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Community watch — The Honorable District Court Judge Amanda E. Stevenson will speak during the Cobble Stone Community Watch meeting to be held at Raleigh Road Baptist Church today at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcomed to attend and bring friends. Refreshments will be served.

Sign-up deadline — The next session for Lunch and Learn through the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce will be held June 19 at Franklinton Town Hall Annex, 5 W. Mason St., Franklinton. Networking and sign-in will take place from 11:30-11:50 a.m., with lunch (sponsored by the Franklin County Committee of 100) and the presentation running from 11:50 a.m.-1 p.m. Coach Michael Washington will speak about networking. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Deadline — Today is the last day farmers and producers in Vance and Warren counties may sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program. Meal and More — “Granville Primary Care - A Focus on Patient-Centered Care for the Entire Family” will be the theme for the free Oxford Meal and More session June 18, from 6-7 p.m., in Meeting Room 133 on the south campus of Vance-Granville Community College, 1547 South Campus Drive, Creedmoor. Elderly abuse awareness — June 15 is recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. In collaboration with the Vance County Department of Social Services and Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments, Spring Street Missionary Baptist Church, 511 Orange St., Henderson, will hold a special event today.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Hike/plantation tour — The Fishing Creek Hike & Cherry Hill Plantation Tour will take place today, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Cherry Hill Plantation, Warrenton. The event will begin with a hike along Fishing Creek, followed by a tour of the plantation house. Attendees should bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the lawn. Horse and pony show — The Boydton Ruritan Club’s 53rd annual horse and pony show will take place at the Boydton Ballpark on Park Street. Registration is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., with classes to begin at 3 p.m. The fee is $4 for adults and $2 for children (12 and under). Class fees are $8 per (except for championship classes, which are $25). Coggins are required. The Boydton Fire Department will provide food and beverages. Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Sewing camp (first session) — Carol Montague will conduct week-long sewing camps at her home near Tar River Road and N.C. 15 south of Oxford, today- June 21, from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m daily. Children (8+ years of age) may participate even without prior sewing experience. Registration ($25 total fee) will be on a first-come, first serve basis. Call Montague at (919) 603-1921.

Nomination period begins — Through Aug. 1, local farmers and ranchers may now submit nominations for Vance-Warren County Farm Service Agency county committee seats. The nomination form, FSA-669A, along with other information concerning the elections may be obtained at fsa.usda.gov/elections. Forms must be postmarked or dropped off at the Vance-Warren County U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center by the close of business Aug. 1.

Reception — Brian M. Alligood, Granville County manager, will be honored at a reception to be held in the meeting room at the Granville Expo and Convention Center, 4185 N.C. 15 South, Oxford, from 4-5:30 p.m.

 

Tuesday

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Granville-Vance District Health Department — The Granville-Vance District Health Department Board of Health will be meeting this month at the Granville County Health Dept., 101 Hunt Drive Oxford, at 7 p.m. This is a different location from the board’s regular meeting place.

Safe Kids Henderson — Vance Coalition and the bicycle unit at the Henderson Police Dept. will be sponsoring a bicycle rodeo safety course in parking lot of the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 12:30-4 p.m. Coalition members are needed to assist with this event.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Pam Hester of the Downtown Development Center.

Father/daughter event — Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc., and the Vance Family Resource Center invite fathers (and father figures) to a Daddy & Daughter Date Night. At this event, fathers will treat their daughters to an evening of dinner, dancing and fun from 6-8 p.m. This event is free, but reservations are required. Blood drive — An American Red Cross blood drive will take place from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in the hospital classroom on the lower level of the John T. Church Building at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. The hospital is encouraging donors to make appointments.
