Today

Family reunion — The Woodlief Family Reunion will take place today at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church, 4044 Fairport Road, Kittrell. A covered dish lunch will be served at 1 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. All descendants of Emmett and Lucinda Dean Woodlief are invited to attend. Art exhibit/meet and greet — Adult students of Billy Farmer will exhibit their watercolor paintings a Leslie Martin’s Pottery Studio in downtown Franklinton and be available for a meet and greet today, from 1-4 p.m. This is day two of a two-day event.

Bike ride fundraiser — Brewer Cycles’ annual bike ride will take place today. Anyone interested in participating may sign-up today by visiting Brewer Cycles to RSVP. Tickets are priced at $20 per. Sign-up will begin at 11 a.m. The ride will commence at 1:30 p.m. Bikers will return around 5 p.m., where a meal will be served. Door prizes will be given away. Donations will be accepted as well. Checks should be made out to: Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. The rain date for this event is June 16.

Reading program — Perry Memorial Library will kick off its summer reading program at 5:30 p.m. Anyone who wishes to participate may pick up a reading package at that time. To kick off the program, Big Bang Boom will be performing live, at 6 p.m., at the library.

 

Monday

Beekeepers club — The Kerr/ Tar Beekeepers Club will meet at 7 p.m. in the

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society will conduct its monthly meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the North Carolina History Room at Perry Memorial Library. Patricia Steed will present a program concerning Joseph Renn (born: circa 1750; died: 1833). Members and guests are welcome to attend.

Summer camp — Applications for the Young Lions Summer Enrichment Camp at the Vance County Learning Center are currently being accepted for children throughout the Tri-County area. Beginning today and running through Aug. 16, camps will be conducted on a week-by-week basis, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The registration fee is $75 per week. This fee is all inclusive (meals, snacks, a T-shirt, field trip expenses, craft materials). For families, members can register together at $50 per person. Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Administrative Services Center, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson.

Community watch — The White Oak Drive/Lakeview Drive Community Watch meeting for June will take place today, at 6:30 p.m., in the chapel at Flowers Funeral Home on Oxford Road in Henderson. Dave Ahner of Ahner Securities will speaker.

Fishing rodeo — Registration is now open for 4-H Fishing Rodeo I for children (ages 8-14), which will be held today, from 9 a.m.-noon. For $6, children will learn basic fishing skills and safety, and fish identification. Rods and bait will be provided. Come to 305 Young St., Henderson, to fill out enrollment forms and pay an additional $2 insurance fee prior to today.

Gardening for children — Registration takes place today for 4-H “Soils to Salads: How Does Your Garden Grow?” Classes for children (ages 8-11) will be taught June 11-13, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. For $10 (all three days), master gardeners will teach them about sowing seeds, soil and plants. Students will visit a farm, cook locally-grown food, and watch area farmers raise crops and animals. Visit the Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, 305 Young St., Henderson, to register. An additional $2 insurance fee is required.

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

 

Tuesday

Mental health plan — The Cardinal Innovations/Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Safe Kids Henderson — Vance Coalition will be sponsoring a free child passenger safety car seat clinic at Great Beginnings Christian Childcare, 905 Americal Road, Henderson, to help with the car seat check, from 3-6 p.m.

Extension and Community Association — The Vance County Extension and Community Association will meet at 4 p.m. in the Extension Office, 305 Young St., Henderson. Both members and non-members are invited to attend. Atty. John Zollicoffer will speak on the topics of wills, estates and trusts.

Lunch & Learn — “10 Top Strategies for Increasing Sales” will be the topic for the Lunch & Learn session taking place in the Granville County Chamber of Commerce board room at noon. Canning/freezing workshops — The Can It & Freeze It Workshops will be held June 18 and 25, from 6-8:15 p.m., at the Granville County Extension Center. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Deadline — Today is the last day farmers and producers in Vance and Warren counties may sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program. Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Hike/plantation tour — The Fishing Creek Hike & Cherry Hill Plantation Tour will take place today, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Cherry Hill Plantation, Warrenton. The event will begin with a hike along Fishing Creek, followed by a tour of the plantation house. Attendees should bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the lawn. Horse and pony show — The Boydton Ruritan Club’s 53rd annual horse and pony show will take place at the Boydton Ballpark on Park Street. Registration is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., with classes to begin at 3 p.m. The fee is $4 for adults and $2 for children (12 and under). Class fees are $8 per (except for championship classes, which are $25). Coggins are required. The Boydton Fire Department will provide food and beverages. June 17

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

June 18

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Safe Kids Henderson — Vance Coalition and the bicycle unit at the Henderson Police Dept. will be sponsoring a bicycle rodeo safety course in parking lot of the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 12:30-4 p.m. Coalition members are needed to assist with this event.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Pam Hester of the Downtown Development Center.
