Today

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post No. 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Chicken plates — Bearpond Volunteer Fire Dept. will be selling grilled chicken plates today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at the station. Tickets for plates (which will include a half chicken, two sides, bread and dessert) are $7 each. Eat-in, take-out and delivery are all available. Saturday

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Children’s program — Today, at 2:30 p.m., a free water safety activity with a ranger kicks off the recreation season and signals the opening of the Joseph S. J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, 5164 Buggs Island Road, Boydton, Va. Bobber the Water Safety Dog and his friends at Waterbowl Lake will teach attendees about water safety. Those who bring their own white T-shirt will have the opportunity to create their own one-of-a-kind Bobber T-shirt. Admission to the center and all park programs are free; the park will be open Saturdays, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Alumni meeting — The Tri-County chapter: Granville, Vance and Warren Alumni of Shaw U. will hold its next meeting today, at 11 a.m., at Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St., Oxford. Triad chapter meeting — The Henderson Institute Triad Chapter will hold its regular semi-monthly meeting today, at 11 a.m., at the Henderson Institute Museum on Rockspring Street. New members and friends are both welcome. Non-perishable items for Area Christians Together in Service will be collected at this time. Today is also the deadline to sign up for the trip to the Barn Theatre in Greensboro for the production of “The Color Purple” on April 19. Tickets are $65 per person. Children’s program — Today, at 2:30 p.m., a free nature activity at Joseph S. J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, 5164 Buggs Island Road, Boydton, Va. The program, “Look it’s a Bird!”, will explore the world of birds, learning about all the ways they are different. (No live birds will be used for this program.) Attendees will have the opportunity to make a special treat for the birds back at home. Anyone will food allergies should plan accordingly. Admission to the center and all park programs are free; the park on Sundays, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Monday

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Boys & Girls Club — The Boys and Girls Club Franklin Unit will be having its annual fundraiser at Johnny’s Barbecue today, from 4-7 p.m. Barbecue plates, with potato salad, slaw and hush puppies will be sold at $8 per. Joint community meeting with legislative delegation — Angela Bryant, N.C. Sen-D, and Nathan Baskerville, N.C. Rep-R, will be on hand today, at 3:30 p.m., for a joint meeting with the Warren County Board of Commissioners. The meeting will take place at the Warren County Armory Civic Center. Rescheduled — The Granville County Board of Education will meet in regular session today, at 6 p.m., at the Granville County Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delacroix St., Oxford. Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the Administrative Services Center Board Room, 1724 Graham Avenue, Henderson. Prior to the school board meeting, the Henderson Middle School Jazz Band will perform between 6:30-7 p.m.

City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a regular meeting today, at 6 p.m., in the Henderson City Council Chambers.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society will conduct its monthly meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., at Perry Memorial Library in the North Carolina History Room. Arlene Bice will present a program on her recently published book, “Ghostly Spirits of Warren County, North Carolina and Beyond.” Copies will be available for purchase at $18.95 each. All members and interested persons are encouraged to attend. Prior to the regular meeting, the library’s board of directors will convene at 5:30 p.m.

 

Tuesday

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.
