Today

Writers group — The Franklin County Arts Council Night Writers Group meets every second and fourth Thursday night, at 7 p.m., at Full Circle Coffee Shop in Youngsville for critique and discussion of writing.

Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every second and fourth Thursday at Spiritual Connections Café, 221 S. Garnett St., Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments — A board meeting for the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments will take place today, with a business session at 7 p.m., at the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments office, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson. A social will begin at 6:30 p.m. Joey Hopkins, NCDOT assistant district engineer, will provide a Division 5 update. Dress will be business casual. The deadline to RSVP has passed.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education Committee will conduct a building and grounds meeting today in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at 8:30 a.m.

Business seminar — Anyone who needs to put together a business plan should attend “Business Plan Basics,” a seminar being presented by Alyssa Mako in Room G133/134 at the Vance-Graville Community College south campus today, from 1-3 p.m. This seminar is free. Call (252) 738-3240 to attend.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

E911 — The Henderson-Vance E911 Advisory will meet at the E911 Operations Center today at 10 a.m.

 

Saturday

Blood drive — The American Red Cross, will be conducting a blood donation drive today at St. James Church, 3275 U.S. 158 Bypass. The drive will last from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Appointments to donate can be arranged by calling Rick Seekins at (252) 438-8712.

Fundraiser — Barbecue plates will be sold for $7 each at The Country Lounge & Grill, 823 Youngsville Blvd. South, Wake Forest, today at 4 p.m. Attendees will also enjoy live music and a raffle. Plates will include barbecue, potatoes, slaw and bread. Proceeds will go to The Family Corner convenience store, 2020 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, which was robbed on Jan. 1. Granville Health System — The board of trustees will conduct a meeting at 5 p.m. in the classroom.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

City council — The Henderson City Council will hold a meeting in the Henderson City Council Chambers at 6 p.m., followed by a work session.

Chamber banquet — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its 71st annual membership banquet for today at 6:30 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center on the main campus in Henderson. There will be a pre-event performance from bluegrass and gospel group, the Kudzu Ramblers. Dr. Holiday, “The Humorous Hypnotist,” will be the guest speaker and provide entertainment. Artist grant workshop — The 2014 Regional Artist Program Grant Workshop will take place at the Franklinton Library, 9 W. Mason St., Franklinton, today, from 3-4 p.m. The grant ($200-$,1500) is designed to support art projects that will advance the applicant’s career in demonstrable ways. Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. The group is continuing to follow the National Stroke Association Discovery Circles program. Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. This month’s topic will be “Staying Fit in 2013: Exercising and Preventing Further Strokes.” There is no charge for this group.
