Today

Discussion on first amendment — Jennifer Rudinger, executive director of North Carolina’s American Civil Liberties Union, will lead a discussion of the United States Constitution’s first amendment and its author’s concepts regarding Separation of Church and State today, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., in the South Granville Public Library, 1547 South Campus Drive, Creedmoor. All are welcome to attend and bring a friend.

Monday

Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every Monday at Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Volunteer workday — To celebrate a Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, community members have been invited to the Warren County High School garden today, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., to take parent in a volunteer workday. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools and donations of canned goods. Upon entering school grounds, 149 Campus Drive, Warrenton, volunteers should follow the signs to the garden.

Holiday breakfast — Spring Street Baptist Church on 511 Orange Street in Henderson will host a breakfast at 8 a.m. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Rev. Carson Foster Jones Jr. will be the featured speaker.

Holiday program — In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. will speak today during a 5 p.m. event in the Northern Granville Middle School auditorium.

Holiday parade/service — Today in Littleton, at 9:30 a.m., a parade will begin at the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center, followed by a noon service in the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Dr. C.E. McCollum will be the featured speaker.

Holiday observance — Henderson City Hall is closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

 

Tuesday

Granville Health System — The board of directors will conduct a meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the board room.

Granville Health System — The finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the board room.

Lung disease support group — The Four County Better Breathers Club is for people (and their family members) with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or other lung diseases. The club offers patient-focused, community-based educational opportunities and support to people with breathing difficulties. The next meeting will be held today, at noon, in Maria Parham Medical Center’s auditorium. Teri Spence, RN from the hospital, will speak on the topic of “Staying Healthy During the Cold & Flu Season.” Contact her at (252) 436-1573 for more information or to RSVP. Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society 1881 will meet today at the Perry Memorial Library, Henderson. The meeting, usually held the third Monday night of the month, has been moved due to the Martin Luther King Holiday. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

Wednesday

Strategic planning retreat — The Henderson City Council Strategic Planning Retreat will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at 8 a.m.

Thursday

Writers group — The Franklin County Arts Council Night Writers Group meets every second and fourth Thursday night, at 7 p.m., at Full Circle Coffee Shop in Youngsville for critique and discussion of writing.

Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments — A board meeting for the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments will take place today, with a business session at 7 p.m., at the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments office, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson. A social will begin at 6:30 p.m. Joey Hopkins, NCDOT assistant district engineer, will provide a Division 5 update. Dress will be business casual. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

E911 — The Henderson-Vance E911 Advisory will meet at the E911 Operations Center today at 10 a.m.

Community concert series — The Henderson Community Concert Association presents Violinist Ann Fontanella today, at 8 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center auditorium. Blood drive — The American Red Cross, will be conducting a blood donation drive today at St. James Church, 3275 U.S. 158 Bypass. The drive will last from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Appointments to donate can be arranged by calling Rick Seekins at (252) 438-8712.

Granville Health System — The board of trustees will conduct a meeting at 5 p.m. in the classroom.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

City council — The Henderson City Council will hold a meeting in the Henderson City Council Chambers at 6 p.m., followed by a work session.

Chamber banquet — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its 71st annual membership banquet for today at 6:30 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center on the main campus in Henderson. There will be a pre-event performance from bluegrass and gospel group, the Kudzu Ramblers. Dr. Holiday, “The Humorous Hypnotist,” will be the guest speaker and provide entertainment. Reservations are required.

Artist grant workshop — The 2014 Regional Artist Program Grant Workshop will take place at the Franklinton Library, 9 W. Mason St., Franklinton, today, from 3-4 p.m. The grant ($200-$,1500) is designed to support art projects that will advance the applicant’s career in demonstrable ways.
