Today

Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.

Senior Democrats — The Warren County Senior Democrats will meet at the Senior Center in Warrenton today at 1 p.m. Information sheets concerning the procuring of photo IDs will be reviewed. Members who participated in the Thousands on Jones Street Rally will share their experience. All Democrats (of all ages) are welcome to attend.

Board of commissioners, education — A joint meeting between the Granville County Board of Commissioners and the Granville County Board of Education will take place today, at 7 p.m., in the meeting room at the Granville County Expo and Convention Center. Redistricting will be the topic of discussion.

Boating safety course — The second of two sessions of an approved boating safety course, “About Boating Safely,” will take place today, from 6-10 p.m., at the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, 414 S. Garnett St., Henderson. Anyone under the age of 26 wishing to operate a boat jet skis must attend this class. The cost is $20 per person. Early college information session — Michael Bullard, principal of Vance County Early College High School, will conduct an information session for eighth-graders and their guardians today, at 6 p.m., in the auditorium at Henderson Middle School. All eighth-grade students (and guardians) interested in the application process are encouraged to attend.

Genealogical society meeting — The Granville County Genealogical Society will conduct its next meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the large meeting room at Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St,, Oxford. Pam Thornton, director of the Granville County Historical Society Museum, will give an update on a program concerning a murder previously presented by society member Dick Taylor during a meeting back in June of 2009.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Talent show — The Granville Central High School Parent-Teacher Organization is sponsoring the “GCHS Got Talent” talent show today, starting at 7 p.m. Pizza, candy and beverages will be on sale. Admission is $5 per person.

Meal/silent auction — The seventh annual Soup-er Silent Auction to benefit Relay for Life will take place today, from 5:30-8 p.m., in the fellowship hall at Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson. The public is invited to attend. In addition to the auction, this event will include a “Dine for a Donation” buffet style meal. All donations will be tax deductible.

Ribbon cutting — Tots-N-More Consignment Boutique, 216 Dabney Drive, Henderson, owned by Joyce doughty, will conduct a ribbon cutting today at 11 a.m. The business is a consignment store for those seeking to sell gently used clothes for children, maternity clothes, toys, etc.

Economic forum — The Sunrise Forum for the month of March will take place at the Granville County Economic Development office, 310 Williamsboro St. (beside City Hall), Oxford, today at 8 a.m. Bill Edwards with Granville County Economic Development will present an update.

Ribbon cutting — A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Oxford Housing Authority Maintenance Facility will take place at 600 Raleigh St., Oxford, today, from 4-5:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy refreshments and a tour of the facility.

Shrine club event — The Henderson Shrine Club Steamfest will begin today. Doors will open at 6 p.m.; food (steamed shrimp and oysters with all the trimmings, plus beverages) will be served from 7-8 p.m. Tickets are available from any shrine club member. This is day one of a two-day event.

Meet and great — The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service in Louisburg, 103 S. Bickett Blvd., will conduct a meet and greet Friday, from 10-11:30 a.m., for Franklin County’s legislative delegation from the N.C. General Assembly. Bobbie Richardson (N.C. Rep.-D), Jeff Collins (N.C. Rep.-R) and Chad Barefoot (N.C. Sen.-R) will be on hand. Everyone is invited to attend and voice their concerns with these state representatives. Light refreshments will be served.

Anti-violence rally — There will be a “Stop the Violence Rally” sponsored by some of the area ministers downtown Henderson at the courthouse today, at 6:30 p.m. All community watch groups/members and concerned residents/guests are encouraged to attend. Saturday

Stew sale — The Club No. 15 Prince Hall Mason Stew Sale will take place today, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Beacon Light Lodge No. 249, 1204 W. Andrews Ave., Henderson. Stew will be sold at $7 per quart. Call Lamont Nowell at (252) 432-0884 for tickets.

Vance County Democrats — The Vance County Democrats will hold a meeting of all of its precincts in the Vance County Commissioners meeting room today, from 10 a.m.-noon. There will be a joint opening; afterward, the precincts will break off into separate groups. Any and all registered Democrats are invited to attend. Cruise-in (relocation) — The 2013 Tar River Cruisers’ Cruise Ins will begin today, from 5:30-8 p.m. Due to the closing of Wimpy’s Grill, today’s meeting will take place in the parking lot of Lowes’/Staples. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.

Jazz social — Henderson Institute Historical Museum will host a jazz social today, from 5-7 p.m. at the museum, 629 W. Rock Spring St., Henderson. The Just Friends Sextet will perform. Community concert series — The Henderson Community Concert Association will present The Side Street Strutters today, at 8 p.m., in the Vance-Granville Community College civic center. Admission is by 2012-13 Season Tickets and there will be no tickets available at the door. However, tickets for the 2013-14 Series will be available.

Book sale — The “Friend’s Café will be open again during the next Friends of the Library book sale, taking place today, from 10 a.m-1 p.m., at Thornton Library in Oxford. Refreshments will be sold. Friends members may begin shopping at 10 a.m. (one hour before the general public may do so). However, anyone who wishes to become a member may pay the $5-per-year membership fee during the book sale.

Boot drive — The Friends of Vance County Jail Relay Team will be conducting a boot drive today, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the corner of Dabney Drive and Garnett Street.

 

Sunday

Theater trip deadline — Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is sponsoring a trip to the Barn Theatre in Greensboro for “The Color Purple ... the Musical” on April 6 at 6 p.m. Today is the sign-up deadline. The cost, $68 per person, includes dinner, the show, gratuity and transportation. Monday

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Library board of trustees — The Perry Memorial Library Board of Trustees will conduct a meeting in the library board room today at 5 p.m.

City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a regular meeting today, at 6 p.m., in the city council chambers.

Quilting club — The March meeting of Vance Quilts R Us will take place today, at 6 p.m., in the dining room of Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. Members will be celebrating the Green – Attendees are encouraged to come out to view the Shamrock Quilt Blocks and to enter a drawing (25 cents per entry) to receive a bag of them. Everyone is welcome.

 

Tuesday

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Appearance commission — The Henderson Community Appearance Commission will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3 p.m.

 

Wednesday

Ribbon cutting — The New U with Shortcake, a home-based weight-loss supplement provider owned by Clareese Moss, will conduct a ribbon cutting today, 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce.

 

March 14

Park and recreations — The Henderson-Vance Park & Recreations Commission will meet at Aycock Recreation Center today at noon.

Community watch — A meeting of the Cobble Stone Community Watch Association will take place at Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Temple Church, 90 S. Lake Lodge Road, today at 7 p.m.

 

March 15

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.
