Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Media center summer hours — All 15 local public schools in Vance County will be open each Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., now through Aug. 1.

Lion’s Club — the Henderson Lions Club will meet at 6:30 p.m., at Henderson Country Club. Alan Wooten, editor of The Daily Dispatch, will be the guest speaker. The Henderson Lions Club primarily serves the needs of the visually and hearing impaired in the community, in addition to other local concerns. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Ribbon cutting — There will be a ribbon cutting for Grammies Kitchen, 209 N. Main St., Creedmoor, at 10 a.m.

Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.

Farmers market — The Vance County Farmers Market, located at the Henderson City Operations Center, 900 S. Beckford Drive, will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon. For more information and to register as a vendor, contact Wayne Rowland at (252) 438-8188.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Annual Fundraiser — The Moose Lodge will have it’s annual fundraiser yardsale and breakfast today, at 534 North Williams Street. Indoor space is available in case of inclement weather.

Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Construction Industry workshop — The N.C. Department of Labor is offering both a 10-Hour and a 30-Hour Construction Industry Awareness Course, starting today in Asheville. The former will extend through Tuesday; the latter will run through Friday. Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10-11:30 a.m., Introduction to Composing/Songwriting (ages 9-15); 10 a.m.-noon, Beginning Violin (ages 6-14); 12:30-2:30 p.m., Beginning Piano (ages 6-12); and 2-4 p.m., Intermediate Violin (ages 9-18). Tuesday

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Acidified foods course — The Acidified Foods Processing and Packaging — Better Process Control School, beginning today and running through July 18, will take place at the Brasstown Community Center in Brasstown. The course will qualify commercial operators of plants producing acidified foods to meet the requirements of the umbrella good manufacturing practice and the specific good manufacturing practice for acidified foods (21 CFR Part 114). Hunter safety certification — A free 4-H and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Hunter Safety Certification class will be held today through July 18, from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. daily. Perry Library — Perry Library is hosting Father Columba Nnorom in a presentation of his experiences with Nelson Mandela in honor of Mandela’s 95th birthday. The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. in the Farm Bureau room. Light refreshments will be provided.

Kittrell Community Watch – Kittrell Community Watch will meet at 7 p.m., at the Kittrell Community House, across the street from the fire station. The meeting will include light refreshments, door prizes, and a presentation on elder abuse from Vance County Social Services. Everyone is welcome.
