Today

Christmas parade — The Warrenton Christmas Parade will step off today at 5 p.m.

Visit from Santa — The Henderson-Vance Recreation Dept. will be sponsoring Cookies and Milk with Santa today, from 10 a.m.1 p.m., at Aycock Recreation Center at 307 Carey Chapel Road. Pictures with Santa will cost $3 each. For more information, call (252) 438-3408.

Alumni meeting — The John R. Hawkins Alumni and Friends general meeting will be held in the Warren County Memorial Library Community Room today at 10 a.m. Members and friends are encouraged to be present.

Employee reunion — All former Harriet Henderson employees are invited to a reunion, today at 3 p.m., which will take place at Hecks Grove School in Warrenton. Community feed — Clubs United As 1 will be sponsoring a community feed to be held at Area Christians Together in Service, 305 S. Chestnut St., Henderson, from 2-5 p.m. The group consists of Reel Riderz and 2 Tight Unlimited (motorcycle clubs); and Most Wanted Divas, Dazzling Divas, Mysterious Divas, Tha Desireables, PLNC, Changing Faces, Blaque Dawls and Chosen Angels (social clubs).

Christmas concert — Historic Cherry Hill, located on N.C. 58 in nearby Inez, presents The Oakwood Waits today at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the performance. Attendees will also have a chance to visit with the musicians. For more information, visit cherryhillconcerts.com.

 

Monday


Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Vance Charter School — The board of directors of Vance Charter School will meet in the media center at the school today at 7 p.m.

Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets today at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Ribbon cutting — MedAccess Urgent Care recently opened at 700 U.S. 1 in Youngsville. The practice, along with the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Youngsville Area Business Association, will host a ribbon cutting today at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Lakeland Theater — “A Christmas Carol” is now playing at Lakeland Theater in Littleton. Tonight’s showing begins at 8 p.m.: doors will open 45 minutes beforehand. Tickets are available by telephone, (252) 586-3124 or online at etix.com (etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=4382).

Seasonal flu clinics — Granville-Vance District Health Departments will conduct flu clinics on Friday afternoons, from 1-4 p.m. The cost of the flu vaccine is $35, or $55 for the higher dose flu vaccine recommended by the Centers or Disease Control and Prevention to provide better protection to individuals 65 years of age and older. Medicare Part B (red, white, and blue card) and Medicaid, as well as Blue Cross Blue Shield and Wellpath will be accepted for immunizations. Attendees should bring their insurance card, and wear short sleeves so that clinic personnel may serve the public as efficiently as possible. Those individuals with private Medicare, such as Humana or Premier, will need to go to their primary care doctor because those providers will not reimburse the department. Some children ages six months through 18 years of age may qualify to receive the flu vaccine at no cost. The health department will also be offering the pneumonia vaccine to those who are over age 65, and to those under age 65 who have chronic illnesses. The cost of the pneumonia vaccine is $95.

Toy drive giveaway — Antoine Hargrove and The House of Jabez Youth Outreach Center will hold their first annual Toy Drive Giveaway today, from 10 a.m. until supplies last. This will take place at Platinum Cuts Barbershop in Henderson. In order to receive toys, children must be accompanied by an adult. One toy each will be given out to each child. Dec. 24

Cancellation — The Henderson City Council meeting and work session has been cancelled in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. The group is continuing to follow the National Stroke Association Discovery Circles program. Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend.
