Today

Memorial Day Service — The Vance County Veterans Council has announced that a Memorial Day Service will be held today, starting at 2 p.m., at Sunset Gardens. The guest speaker will be Col. Archie B. Taylor Jr. (retired).

 

Monday

Memorial Day observance — A wreath laying ceremony, in honor of Memorial Day, will take place today, at 10 a.m., at Gazebo Park on Central Avenue (between D and E streets, which will be closed to traffic), Butner. This family event will include military vehicles on display, favors for children, live music and more.

 

Tuesday

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Screenings — Stroke and osteoporosis screenings performed by Life Line Screening are scheduled at Central Baptist Church, 2574 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson. Pre-registration is required. Board of commissioners — The Granville County Board of Commissioners will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the meeting room at the Granville Expo and Convention Center, 4185 N.C. 15 South, Oxford. The purpose of the special meeting is for a budget workshop to continue budget deliberations.

NAACP — The Vance County NAACP will conduct its monthly meeting today, at 7 p.m., at Gateway Community Development Center on Garnett Street in Henderson. The youth session will take place beforehand, from 6-6:45 p.m.

Democratic executive meeting — The Vance County Democratic Executive meeting will take place today, at 6 p.m., at Perry Memorial Library in Henderson. All precinct officers, publicly-elected Democratic officials, as well as all interested Democratics are encouraged to attend. Nominees will be selected for the State Board of Election.

 

Wednesday

Small business luncheon — A small business luncheon will take place today, at noon, at Henderson Country Club. This four-county chamber of commerce event will be held to recognize the winners of the Small Business of the Year Awards.

Request for proctors — Henderson Collegiate will be conducting end-of-grade tests this month. Volunteers are being sought as proctors to monitor students today from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Suzanne Holt will accept RSVPs. Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education Finance Committee will meet today, at 5:30 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room. This will be followed by a policy committee meeting, at 6 p.m., also in the Superintendent’s Conference Room.

Torch run — N.C. Special Olympics Law-Enforcement Torch Run will be held today at 9 a.m., starting at the Henderson Police Dept., 200 Breckenridge St. It will continue south on Garnett Street to Dabney Drive, turning right onto Oxford Road and continuing on to Sunset Gardens. Mayor James “Pete” O’Geary and Tommy Hester, County Commission chairman, will deliver opening remarks; Chief Keith Sidwell, and Sheriff Petet White will light the torch. Thursday

Meet Me in the Street — The second concert in this year’s Meet Me in the Street series of concerts will take place today, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., in downtown Henderson. Steve Owens and the Summertime Band will be performing.

Business After Hours — Kim Jordan will host the next Granville County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event today, from 5-6:30 p.m., at Citizens Community Bank on Main Street in Oxford.

Board of education — The Vance County Board of Education will conduct a called meeting today, at 5:30 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room at the Administrative Services Center, 1724 Graham Ave., Henderson.

College fair — Kittrell Job Corps Center will host a college fair at the center in the gymnasium from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Representatives from over 20 community colleges, universities, barber and beauty colleges and truck driving schools will be on hand. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

 

Saturday

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.
