Today

Fish fry — The public is invited to attend the annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Vance Square Shopping Center on Raleigh Road (across from Supply Line Country Market - in the building formerly occupied by Super 10). Plates ($7 per) will be available for eat-in or take-out, and will feature fish, slaw, potatoes and hush puppies (and beverages for those eating in). All proceeds will benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Cookware — Volunteer Services of Maria Parham Medical Center will be hosting a dynamic cookware sale today, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., in the J.T. Church Classroom at the hospital. This is day one of a two-day event.

4-H camp (registration deadline) — Today is last day for 4-H Camp Registration for boys and girls (ages 8-14) to attend the Eastern 4-H Environmental Education Center from June 16-21. Thursday

Ribbon cutting — A ribbon cutting will take place today, at 5:15 p.m., for the new emergency room at Granville Health System, 1010 College St., Oxford.

Cookware — Volunteer Services of Maria Parham Medical Center will be hosting a dynamic cookware sale today, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., in the J.T. Church Classroom at the hospital. This is day two of a two-day event.

Silent auction/dinner — Henderson Collegiate is seeking silent auction items. Today, the school will be having its first-ever fundraising event, the Provide for the Pride Dinner. This event will kick off with a silent auction. Afterward, a dinner program will take place, creating the opportunity for guests to partner with Henderson Collegiate in support of the school’s mission. Plate sale — Oxford Preparatory High School will conduct a plate sale today, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., across from CVS, 215 Williamsboro St., Oxford. Fried chicken/chopped barbecue plates, catered by Ted Wheeler, will be sold. Delivery of large orders will be available to those in both Oxford and Henderson. Plates (at $8 per) may be obtained from members of the school’s board of directors and parents of students who have been admitted.

Community watch — Kittrell Community Watch will meet today, at 7 p.m., at the Kittrell Community House (across the street from the fire station). A pizza supper and fellowship time will be followed by a presentation on Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity (fvwopp.com/). This organization provides programs to improve quality of life and enhance economic opportunity across the Tri-County area. Everyone is welcome, especially newcomers.

Crime prevention — Vance County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will meet today, at 8:30 a.m., at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson.

Community watch — The West Hills, West Creek, U.S. 158 Bypass, will have its May Community Watch meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the auditorium at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. The guest speaker will be Dave Ahner of Ahner Security Inc. All neighbors are encouraged to attend.

Women’s club — The Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club will hold its regular monthly dinner meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the conference room of Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. Community day — Club 15 and Beacon Light Lodge will present their third annual community day at the Aycock Recreational Complex, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, today, from noon-5 p.m. Admission is free. Walkathon — A walkathon to benefit St. Jude Children Research Hospital is scheduled for today. Registration will take place at the Warren County Armory Civic Center, 501 U.S. 158 Bus. East, Warrenton, at 6:30 a.m. The walkathon itself will commence there, at 7 a.m. Afterward, participants will receive a police escort for their return to the armory. Organizers are requesting donations, and volunteers to provide transportation for walkers straying from the group and for maintaining water stations along the route. Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Board of directors — The Vance Charter School Board of Directors will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the media center at the school.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society 1881 will hold its monthly meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., at the Perry Memorial Library. The program “Searching For Our Relatives In Wales” will be presented by Joanne Carpenter. The public is invited to attend.

South Council — The South Council will meet today, at noon, at Bob’s BBQ. Kevin Otis, the new administrator at the Masonic Home For Children, will be the guest speaker.

 

Tuesday

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.
