Today

Class reunion planning — Members of the J.F. Webb High School Class of 1973 have organized a planning committee for their 40th class reunion. The committee will meet in the conference room at Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford today at 6 p.m. All classmates are invited to attend.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Sunrise Forum — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Sunrise Forum will be today, at 8 a.m., at the Granville County Convention and Expo Center, 4185 N.C. 15-South, Oxford. Granville County manager Brian Alligood and County Commissioners’ chairman Edgar Smoak will present an update on Granville County. The public is invited to attend: a light breakfast (biscuits, fruit, juice and coffee) will be served beforehand.

Small business luncheon — A small business luncheon will take place today, at noon, at Henderson Country Club. This four-county chamber of commerce event will be held to recognize the winners of the Small Business of the Year Awards.

 

Saturday

Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Strawberry Days — The Strawberry Days crafts bazaar and 5-K road race will take place at the Granville County Recreation Dept. today, from 8-11 a.m. Call (919) 603-1100 for more information.

Auditions — The Henderson Rec Players will be having auditions for this summer’s theater season today at First Baptist Church. Parts are available for “The Sound of Music,” running July 11-14, and for “Cabaret,” schedule for Aug. 7-11. Auditions will begin at 10 a.m. for children for the former (enter building from Orange Street) and at 1 p.m. for adults for both shows (enter from Winder Street). Food drive — The Henderson Letter Carriers 21st annual Food Drive will take place today. Any nonperishable food items placed near residential mailboxes will be picked up by carriers on their routes and delivered to a local food bank.

Girls on the Run — This year’s edition of Girls on the Run, will be held in memory of Joan McLaughlin. It will take place today, at 9 a.m., in front of the Henderson Police Department in downtown Henderson. Ridgeway Opry House — There will be a special guest appearance by Don Taylor & Jamie Pridgens. DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society will conduct its next meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., at Perry Memorial Library, in the Farm Bureau Room. Tuesday

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Class on Medicare — An introductory class to Medicare will be offered at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Wednesday

Fish fry — The public is invited to attend the annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Vance Square Shopping Center on Raleigh Road (across from Supply Line Country Market - in the building formerly occupied by Super 10). Plates ($7 per) will be available for eat-in or take-out, and will feature fish, slaw, potatoes and hush puppies (and beverages for those eating in). All proceeds will benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Cookware — Volunteer Services of Maria Parham Medical Center will be hosting a dynamic cookware sale today, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., in the J.T. Church Classroom at the hospital. This is day one of a two-day event.

4-H camp (registration deadline) — Today is last day for 4-H Camp Registration for boys and girls (ages 8-14) to attend the Eastern 4-H Environmental Education Center from June 16-21. Ribbon cutting — A ribbon cutting will take place today, at 5:15 p.m., for the new emergency room at Granville Health System, 1010 College St., Oxford.

Cookware — Volunteer Services of Maria Parham Medical Center will be hosting a dynamic cookware sale today, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., in the J.T. Church Classroom at the hospital. This is day two of a two-day event.

Silent auction/dinner — Henderson Collegiate is seeking silent auction items. Today, the school will be having its first-ever fundraising event, the Provide for the Pride Dinner. This event will kick off with a silent auction. Afterward, a dinner program will take place, creating the opportunity for guests to partner with Henderson Collegiate in support of the school’s mission. Community day — Club 15 and Beacon Light Lodge will present their third annual community day at the Aycock Recreational Complex, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, today, from noon-5 p.m. Admission is free. Attractions will include a magic show, face painting, a complimentary lunch and refreshments, tips on safety and fire prevention, live entertainment, and resource information from local organizations. Meet and greet — The Cobble Stone community is hosting its annual Meet N Greet gathering today, from 4-6 p.m., in the cul de sac at 103 S. Cobble Creek Drive, Henderson. The rain date for this event will be June 8. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

 

May 20

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

May 21

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.
