Today

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

American Legion — The American Legion Post No. 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

Earth roast — The Stem Ruritan Club’s Earth Roast will take place today. The day before, 1,200 lbs. of beef will be placed in the ground to cook. Meat will be served on the day of the event from 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m. (or until). The club is located on Old N.C.75 in Stem.

Lakeland Theatre Company — “Anne of Green Gables” will be presented today, at 8 p.m., Lakeland Cultural Arts Center in Littleton. Fish fry — The Oxford Lions’ Club’s fish fry will take place today, from 11-2 p.m. and again from 4-7 p.m., at the Oxford Public Works building on McClanahan St., Oxford.

 

Saturday

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Stage production — “Mama’s Girls,” written by Warren County native Garrett Davis, will be presented at E.M. Relay for Life — Vance County Relay for Life will conduct its annual yard sale today, from 7 a.m.-noon, at Victory Christian School, 475 J.P. Taylor Road, Henderson.

Day of Reason — The Oxford Humanists and Freethinkers Association plans to hold its first local Day of Reason at the Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St., Oxford, today from 1-4 p.m. (The library is not sponsoring this event.)

Yard/bake sale — Tar River Cruizers’ second annual charity yard/bake sale will take place today, from 7 a.m. until, at the old armory building, 231 Dabney Drive, Henderson. Alumni meeting — The next Shaw University alumni meeting will be held at Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St, Oxford, today at 11 a.m.

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Bike-a-thon — The Miracle League of Franklin County’s annual bike-a-thon fundraiser will take place today, at 9:30 a.m. For this family event, participants will be able to walk, run, bike and trike for a 3-mile stretch. Attendees will also enjoy a truck and trailer hayride, bounce houses, kiddie train rides, popcorn and snow cones. Proceeds will go toward the “Field of Dreams” project, a baseball field and playground for children with special needs, which will be placed at Long Mill Elementary School in Youngsville. Barbecue plates (chicken or pork) — The Berea Fire Department will conduct a barbecue pork and chicken plate fundraiser today, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at N.C. 158 West Oxford. Eat-in or take-out (for $7 per plate) are both available.

Cancellation — The Henderson/Vance Chamber of Commerce is informing the public that the St. Bernadette’s Golf Tournament has been cancelled. It may be rescheduled at a later date.

Board of education — The Granville County Board of Education will meet in regular session today, at 6 p.m., at the Granville County Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delzacroix St., Oxford. Social Services — The Social Services Board will conduct a special called meeting for the purpose of discussing personnel issues today, at 9 a.m., 122 Young St., Henderson.

 

Tuesday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

Wednesday

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.

May 13

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

 

May 14

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton.
