Today

Community watch — Carey Chapel Community Watch will hold its next meeting today, at 7 p.m., at the Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. All area residents are invited to attend.

Chamber of commerce — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce will have an ambassadors meeting at 8 a.m. in the chamber boardroom.

Board of adjustment — The Granville County Board of Adjustment will hold a special-called meeting in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room in the auditorium at the Granville Expo and Convention Center at 4185 U.S. 15 S., Oxford, today, starting at 7 p.m.

Board of health — The Warren County Board of Health will hold its regular monthly meeting today, at 7 p.m., in the conference room at the Warren County Health Department.

Board of elections — The Vance County Board of Elections will meet today, at 4:30 p.m., in the elections office in the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St., Henderson.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch Group will meet today, at 6:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall of West End Baptist Church. The speaker will be Keith Sidwell, Henderson Police chief.

 

Wednesday

Small business seminar — A free seminar, “Tax Requirements for Small Business,” will be conducted today, from 9 a.m.-noon, in Building 7, Room 7107, at Vance-Granville Community College in Henderson. Attendees will receive information to help them understand requirements, important dates, what records should be kept, the actual filing process, triggers for tax audits, and steps toward preventing or surviving an audit.

Hiring seminar — Harry Ponder will present a seminar entitled “Hiring & Retaining Good Employees” today, from 1-4 p.m., in Bldg. 7, Room 7107, on the main campus at Vance-Granville Community College in Henderson. He will cover 21 issues one might face when hiring an employee, retaining them, and when they must be terminated. Those interested in attending should call (252) 738-3240.

Women writers group — The Second Cup Women Writers Group meets first and third Wednesday, at 9:30 a.m., at Full Circle Coffee Shop in Youngsville for critique and discussion of writing.

 

Thursday

Banquet and meeting — The Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce will host its 36th annual Banquet & Meeting at Green Hill Club, beginning at 6 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the “Citizen of the Year” award. Tickets are on sale at the chamber office, 112 East Nash St., Louisburg; or from any chamber director through Jan. 14. The cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner and entertainment. Community watch — Kittrell Community Watch will meet today, at 7 p.m., at the Kittrell Community House, which is across the street from the fire station. The guest speaker will be Brian Short, director of Vance County Emergency Operations. Light refreshments will be served. All are encouraged to attend and to bring their friends and neighbors.

Community watch — The West Hills, West Creek, U.S. 158 Bypass Community Watch will have its monthly meeting in the auditorium at Maria Parham Medical Center today at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Jon Juntunen, Fire and Life Safety educator for the City of Henderson Fire Department. All neighbors are encouraged to attend.

Women’s club — The Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club will hold it’s regular monthly dinner meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the Conference Room of Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. New members and guests are welcome. For reservations, call (252) 438-6732.

Crime prevention — The Vance County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will meet today, starting a 8:30 a.m., at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road.

Leadership Granville — Leadership Granville will conduct a steering committee meeting in the chamber boardroom today at 8 a.m.

Human resource committee — The Granville County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a human resource committee meeting, hosted by Express Employment Professionals, in the chamber boardroom today at noon. Human resource managers should RSVP the chamber by calling (919) 693-6125.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

 

Saturday

Special needs basketball camp —  The Miracle League of Franklin County has arranged a free basketball camp for children and young adults with special needs. It will take place today, from 1-3 p.m., at Royal Elementary School, 308 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg. Each special needs player will be partnered with 1-2 Bunn High School basketball players to assist them. Trained staff will also be on site. Student arts council event — The monthly music jam for the Franklin County Student Arts Council will take place every first Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Common Ground Coffee House in Bunn. A DJ will host musicians and singers. The kickoff is scheduled for today.

Discussion on first amendment — Jennifer Rudinger, executive director of North Carolina’s American Civil Liberties Union, will lead a discussion of the United States Constitution’s first amendment and its author’s concepts regarding Separation of Church and State today, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., in the South Granville Public Library, 1547 South Campus Drive, Creedmoor. All are welcome to attend and bring a friend.

Peer support group — The Family Issues Peer Support Group for Adults meets every Monday at Maria Parham Medical Center - Center for Rehab, 566 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 6-7 p.m. This is a free, open support group to educate and help individuals who are dealing with family challenges by providing resource information and the opportunity for sharing in a supportive environment with peers. Holiday observance — Henderson City Hall is closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

 

Jan. 22

Granville Health System — The board of directors will conduct a meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the board room.

Granville Health System — The finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the board room.

Lung disease support group — The Four County Better Breathers Club is for people (and their family members) with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or other lung diseases. The club offers patient-focused, community-based educational opportunities and support to people with breathing difficulties. The next meeting will be held today, at noon, in Maria Parham Medical Center’s auditorium. Granville Health System — The board of trustees will conduct a meeting at 5 p.m. in the classroom.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.
