Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Sewing camp (first session) — Carol Montague will conduct week-long sewing camps at her home near Tar River Road and N.C. 15 south of Oxford, today- June 21, from 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. daily. Children (8+ years of age) may participate even without prior sewing experience. Registration ($25 total fee) will be on a first-come, first serve basis. Call Montague at (919) 603-1921.

Nomination period begins — Through Aug. 1, local farmers and ranchers may now submit nominations for Vance-Warren County Farm Service Agency county committee seats. The nomination form, FSA-669A, along with other information concerning the elections may be obtained at fsa.usda.gov/elections. Forms must be postmarked or dropped off at the Vance-Warren County U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center by the close of business Aug. 1.

Reception — Brian M. Alligood, Granville County manager, will be honored at a reception to be held in the meeting room at the Granville Expo and Convention Center, 4185 N.C. 15 South, Oxford, from 4-5:30 p.m.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society 1881, Inc. will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the North Carolina Research Room at Perry Memorial Library. The program will be “The Harris family from Britain to Turner Harris.” Everyone interested in genealogy is invited.

Cancellation — All remaining budget work sessions for the Henderson City Council have been cancelled.

Board of directors — The Vance Charter School Board of Directors will meet Monday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the media center at the school.

Music/arts camps — The Music School of Roanoke Rapids will conduct music and arts camps throughout the summer, beginning today. Camps, each spanning one week, will cost $60 per student, per week. They will all be held at 1100 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids. Tuesday

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Granville-Vance District Health Department — The Granville-Vance District Health Department Board of Health will be meeting this month at the Granville County Health Dept., 101 Hunt Drive Oxford, at 7 p.m. This is a different location from the board’s regular meeting place.

Safe Kids Henderson — Vance Coalition and the bicycle unit at the Henderson Police Dept. will be sponsoring a bicycle rodeo safety course in parking lot of the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, from 12:30-4 p.m. Coalition members are needed to assist with this event.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Pam Hester of the Downtown Development Center.

Ribbon cutting — A ribbon cutting will be conducted at the chamber office, 124 Hillsboro St., Oxford, for Jaymee’s Cleaning Service at 10 a.m.

Wednesday

Housing workshop — Perry Memorial Library, 205 Breckenridge St., Henderson, has scheduled a free, fair housing workshop open to the public, from 10 a.m.-noon. Conducting the workshop will be Jack Holtman, legal aid of North Carolina and presenter of the Fair Housing Project. Ribbon cutting — The Chamber of Commerce of Warren County will conduct a ribbon cutting for Futrell Pharmacy of Warrenton at 11 a.m.

 

Thursday

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Crime prevention — The Vance County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Father/daughter event — Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc., and the Vance Family Resource Center invite fathers (and father figures) to a Daddy & Daughter Date Night. At this event, fathers will treat their daughters to an evening of dinner, dancing and fun from 6-8 p.m. This event is free, but reservations are required. Blood drive — An American Red Cross blood drive will take place from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in the hospital classroom on the lower level of the John T. Church Building at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. The hospital is encouraging donors to make appointments. Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Veterans symposium — The civic center at Vance-Granville Community College’s main campus, 200 Community College Road, Henderson, will be the site for the Female Veterans Symposium 2013 “Care After Trauma” from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Veterans from Franklin, Vance, Warren and Granville counties are encouraged to attend this free event. All attendees should bring their DD-214, discharge papers and resumes to the event. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Board of education — The Granville County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delacroix St., Oxford, to close out the fiscal year. A brief closed session for personnel / attorney-client privilege will follow.

 

June 28

Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Dedication — The Franklin County Arts Council will dedicate the Quilt Trails of the Tar River at the Bunn Depot on Railroad Street in Bunn in conjunction with the town’s centennial celebration. The festivities will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with the official ribbon cutting taking place at 11 a.m. Activities will include: a quilting bee, a corn hole tournament, sack races, a tug of war and other games, music, food, arts and crafts vendors. Bluegrass musicians are invited to perform.
