Today

Community relations/industry councils — Kittrell Job Corps Center will conduct a combined Community Relations Council and Industry Council meeting today, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in the Underground Café at the center. An update will be present concerning the Education and Career Technical Training planning. U.S. Rep.-D G.K Butterfield, who is scheduled to speak, will be among more than 45 community leaders and business partners planning to attend.

Alumni planning session — All North Carolina Central University alumni from the surrounding area are urged to attend a planning session for the Northern Piedmont Alumni Chapter today, at 7 p.m., at Oxford Children’s Home. Alumni from Granville, Vance and Warren counties are welcome.

Credit seminar — Through the small business center of Vance-Granville Community College, Alyssa Mako will conduct a free seminar on the college’s Franklin campus today, from 1-3 p.m. She will be discussing the definition of “good credit” and how to establish and maintain it, as well as tips for protection from identity theft. Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Closing for holiday — Henderson City Hall will be closed today in observation of Good Friday.

E-911 advisory board — The Henderson-Vance E-911 Advisory Board will meet in the E-911 Operations Center today at 10 a.m.

Fundraiser — Lowe’s Home Improvement will conduct a Muscular Distrophy Association fundraiser today, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (or until). Plates from Southern Caterers — fried trout (2 pieces), fried chicken (1 piece), potato salad and cole slaw — will be sold at $8 per. In addition to the opportunity to test drive a lawn mower, attendees can expect face painting, a corn hole board, live music and a bake sale. Advance food tickets are available at the store.

Fitness classes — Every Saturday, Studio 229, 229 S. Planning board — The Henderson Planning Board will meet in the Henderson City Council Chambers today at 3:30 p.m.

 

Tuesday

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

Zoning board of adjustment — The Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustment will meet today, at 3:30 p.m., in the Henderson City Council Chambers.

Personnel — The Vance County Board of Education will conduct a personnel meeting today, at 5:30 p.m., in the Superintendent’s Conference Room.

Health fair — The Warren County Health Dept. will conduct its 17th annual health fair today, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Free screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose will be available. Attendees can expect door prizes and more. This is a community event sponsored by the health department.

 

April 4

Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.

Fundraiser — A fundraiser benefitting The Dirt Club - 4-H Club at Ray Family Farms and the Franklin County 4-H Enhancement Fund will take place today at 6:30 p.m. A dinner, featuring local farm products, will be served, followed by a benefit auction. April 5

American Legion — The American Legion Post 60 meets regularly on the first Friday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.

 

April 6

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Children’s program — Today, at 2:30 p.m., a free water safety activity with a ranger kicks off the recreation season and signals the opening of the Joseph S. J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, 5164 Buggs Island Road, Boydton, Va. Bobber the Water Safety Dog and his friends at Waterbowl Lake will teach attendees about water safety. Those who bring their own white T-shirt will have the opportunity to create their own one-of-a-kind Bobber T-shirt.

 

April 8

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

April 9

Mental health plan — The Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Building 4, Room W432, Warrenton.
