Today

Afternoon with the Author series — The Friends of Perry Memorial Library are once again sponsoring the Afternoon with the Author series. Today, at 2 p.m., in the Farm Bureau Room at the library, Dr. William Price, brother of the late North Carolina writer Reynolds Price, will be discussing his book “Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina: Three Views of His Character and Creed”; he will be signing copies of the book afterward. Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Breastfeeding class — Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson will offer a free breastfeeding class today in the John T. Church Classroom of the hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Expectant moms are encouraged to attend and bring their support person. Classes are taught by a certified lactation consultant. City council — The Henderson City Council will conduct a meeting today, at 6 p.m., in the Henderson City Council Chambers. A work session will follow.

Business roundtable — The Business Growth & Development Committee of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce will host the first Business Roundtable of 2013 today, at noon, in the chamber board room. Alyssa Mayko, assistant director of the Women’s Business Center of North Carolina will make a presentation entitled “Marketing Your Business on a Small Budget.” The seminar and a boxed lunch will cost $9 per person. Fundraiser — Happy Camper board members are selling tickets to lunch at Rigsbee’s today, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Money raised will go toward summer camps for Franklin County children and Miracle League of Franklin County registration fees.

Business Before Hours — The next monthly membership meeting — Business Before Hours — for the Granville Chamber of Commerce will take place today, at 7:30 a.m., in the dining hall of the St. John’s Building at the Masonic Home for Children. A program update on the home and a tour will follow a sit-down breakfast. The home’s new administrator, Kevin Otis, will also be introduced. Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. The group is continuing to follow the National Stroke Association Discovery Circles program. Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. The title of this month’s stroke support group meeting is “8 Simple Rules,” a personal motivational story by a stroke survivor.

Public forum — Perry Memorial Library recently received a grant to assist in the development of a new five year plan for library services. A draft of the plan has been completed and will be available for public viewing and comment at a public forum at the library today at 6:30 p.m. The plan was developed using the Planning for Results methodology, a library planning process recommended by the Public Library Association; it will cover the fiscal years 2013/14-2017/18.

 

Thursday

Community relations/industry councils — Kittrell Job Corps Center will conduct a combined Community Relations Council and Industry Council meeting today, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in the Underground Café at the center. An update will be present concerning the Education and Career Technical Training planning. U.S. Rep.-D G.K Butterfield, who is scheduled to speak, will be among more than 45 community leaders and business partners planning to attend.

Alumni planning session — All North Carolina Central University alumni from the surrounding area are urged to attend a planning session for the Northern Piedmont Alumni Chapter today, at 7 p.m., at Oxford Children’s Home. Alumni from Granville, Vance and Warren counties are welcome.

Fundraiser — Lowe’s Home Improvement will conduct a Muscular Distrophy Association fundraiser today, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (or until). Plates from Southern Caterers — fried trout (2 pieces), fried chicken (1 piece), potato salad and cole slaw — will be sold at $8 per. In addition to the opportunity to test drive a lawn mower, attendees can expect face painting, a corn hole board, live music and a bake sale. Advance food tickets are available at the store.

Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting nobles are invited to attend.

Fundraiser — A fundraiser benefitting The Dirt Club - 4-H Club at Ray Family Farms and the Franklin County 4-H Enhancement Fund will take place today at 6:30 p.m. A dinner, featuring local farm products, will be served, followed by a benefit auction. April 5

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well.
