Today

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Allen de Hart Concert Series — “ABBA-Mania: An ABBA Tribute” will take place today at Louisburg College. All concert events in this series will take place in the Frances Boyette Dickson Auditorium in the college’s Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available by calling the box office at (919) 497-3300 or toll-free at 1-866-773-6354; or at the door on the day of show. The box office, located in the main lobby of the center, is open Monday-Friday, from 1-5 p.m., as well as one-and-a-half hours before show time. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and seats are not reserved. Additional information and tickets are also available online at louisburg.edu.

Sign-up deadline — Maria Parham Medical Center has scheduled a “Childbirth Education Weekend,” a child birthclass, to take place March 22-23. The deadline to register for the course is Friday: call (252) 436-1881 to do so. The registration fee is $50. For more information, call (252) 436-1414.

Depression in the elderly — An informational session concerning depression in the elderly will take place at Perry Memorial Library in Henderson today from 3:30-5 p.m. Information on differentiating between symptoms of mental illness and the effects of normal aging will be discussed. Call the Vance County Senior Center at (252) 430-0257 to reserve a spot.

Grilled chicken/barbecue plates — Both grilled chicken and pit-cooked barbecue plates will be available today, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in the parking lot of Community Workforce Solutions, 602 S. Garnett St., Henderson. Plates will include boiled potatoes, string beans, rolls, dessert and soda for $7 each. Local delivery is available for a minimum of five orders. Proceeds will go toward the Rosemary Hayes Cancer Fund. Call (252) 492-9555. This is day one of a two-day fundraiser.

 

Saturday

Hawkins alumni meeting — A general meeting of the  John R. Hawkins Alumni and Friends will be held today, at 10 a.m., in the Warren County Memorial Library Community Room. All members and friends are encouraged to attend and to bring at least one new member with them.

Tree giveaway — The Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office will be sponsoring its annual Tree Give Away today, at 9 a.m., at the Farmers’ Market at the Shannon Village Shopping Center in Louisburg. Trees will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. Bare root trees — including Crape Myrtle, Persimmon, Flowering Dogwood, White Oak, Willow Oak, Redbud and Southern Crabapple — will be available. Fried chicken dinners — The Educational Council of the Memorial Forest will be selling fried chicken dinners today, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Hecks Grove Community Center, U.S. 401 South, Warrenton. Plates, at $7 per, will include chicken, potato salad, string beans, rolls and cake. Soda, water, cakes and pies will also be available for sale. Proceeds will benefit the council’s building fund.

Ribbon cutting — The Nail Spa, 700 Hillsboro St., Oxford, will conduct a ribbon cutting today at 2 p.m.

 

Monday

South Council — Bob’s Barbecue, 1589 N.C. 56, Creedmoor, will be the site for a meeting of the South Council today at noon. Faicia Elliott will present the program, an update on this year’s Granville County Relay for Life. A dutch treat lunch will be served.

Board of directors — The Vance Charter School Board of Directors will meet today, at 7 p.m., in the media center at the school.

Workshop — A crisis response and management workshop will take place today, at 9 a.m., at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson. Wanda Brock, MS, mobile crisis coordinator at Holly Hill Hospital, will conduct the session.

Genealogical society — The Vance County Genealogical Society 1881 will hold its monthly meeting today, starting at 6:30 p.m., at Perry Memorial Library, Henderson. The program, the Duke Family of Epsom (part 2), will be presented by Joyce Duke, society president. Society members and guests are invited to attend.

 

Tuesday

Masonic lodge — The Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229 meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the lodge, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. A meal is served before each lodge meeting at 6 p.m., followed by the Stated Communication at 7 p.m. All lodge members and visiting Master Masons are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the third Tuesday of each month.

Community watch — The West End Community Watch group will meet today, at 6;30 p.m., at West End Baptist Church. The speakers for the evening will be Bob and Sylvia Esquivel. They will discuss their recent trip to Belize.

Spaghetti supper — Boy Scout Troop No. 605 will conduct a spaghetti supper today, from 5-7:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church, 222 Young St., Henderson. Meals are $7 per plate. Proceeds will fund the troop’s summer camp trip to Virginia.

Board of elections — The Vance County Board of Elections will meet today, at 4 p.m., in the Vance County Board of Elections office, located in the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St., Henderson.

 

Wednesday

Tupperware sale — Volunteer Services of Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson will be hosting a Tupperware Sale today, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., in the J. T. Church Classroom at the hospital. This is day one of a two-day event.

 

Thursday

Public hearing — A public hearing will be conducted today, at 6 p.m., in the Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity  Administrative Building, 180 S. Beckford Drive, Henderson, by the Board of Directors. All interested citizens are invited to give their input in regards to the annual public housing plan at this time.

Board of adjustment — The Vance County Board of Adjustment will meet today, at 4 p.m., in the Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting room at 122 Young St., Henderson.

Social services board — The Social Services Board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on today, at 8 a.m., in the director’s office at the Vance County Department of Social Services, 350 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson.

Women’s club — The Henderson business and Professional Women’s Club will conduct its regular monthly dinner meeting today, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson. New members and guests are invited to attend. Call (252) 438-6732 to make reservations.

 

March 22

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Breastfeeding class — Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson will offer a free breastfeeding class today in the John T. Church Classroom of the hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Expectant moms are encouraged to attend and bring their support person. Classes are taught by a certified lactation consultant.
