Today

Human relations — The Henderson Human Relations Commission will meet today at the Henderson City Council Chambers at 7 p.m.

Crime prevention — Today’s meeting of the Vance County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will start at 8:30 a.m. at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson.

Community watch — The West Creek, West Hills, 158 Bypass Community Watch will be having its December Community Watch meeting, today, at 6:30 p.m., in the gym at Calvary Baptist Church. All neighbors are encouraged to attend. A covered dish meal will be served.

 

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Lakeland Theater — “A Christmas Carol” is now playing at Lakeland Theater in Littleton. Tonight’s showing begins at 8 p.m.: doors will open 45 minutes beforehand. Tickets are available by telephone, (252) 586-3124 or online at etix.com (etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=4382).

Seasonal flu clinics — Granville-Vance District Health Departments will conduct flu clinics on Friday afternoons, from 1-4 p.m. The cost of the flu vaccine is $35, or $55 for the higher dose flu vaccine recommended by the Centers or Disease Control and Prevention to provide better protection to individuals 65 years of age and older. Medicare Part B (red, white, and blue card) and Medicaid, as well as Blue Cross Blue Shield and Wellpath will be accepted for immunizations. The health department will also be offering the pneumonia vaccine to those who are over age 65, and to those under age 65 who have chronic illnesses. The cost of the pneumonia vaccine is $95.

 

Saturday

Toy drive giveaway — Antoine Hargrove and The House of Jabez Youth Outreach Center will hold its Mega Giveaway on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until supplies last. This will take place at Platinum Cuts Barbershop in Henderson. Toys, clothes, food items and shoes will all be given away. In order to receive toys, children must be accompanied by an adult. Christmas dinner/giveaway — Today, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Infinite Possibilities will provide Christmas dinner, clothes for all ages and toys for children 13 and under. This event will take place in the fellowship hall at Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, located at 742 N. Chestnut St. in Henderson.

Toys for Tots — Remnant Community Development Corporation is sponsoring Toys for Tots during the Christmas season. Toy Distribution Day is scheduled for today, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Oxford Housing Authority Training Center located on 602 Raleigh St. in Oxford.

Ridgeway Opry House — There will be a special guest appearance by The Lang Sisters and Red Casper. Also scheduled to perform are Freida Harlow, Ellen Lloyd, Joyce Hart, Alan and Betsy Reid, Julia Morton, Donnie Gillam, Matt Nelson, Evelena Norwood, Jimmy Bridges, Sam Anderson, Richard Minor, Johnny Pitchford, Jackie Turner, Kim Phillips, Earl West and John White. Cancellation — The Henderson City Council meeting and work session has been cancelled in observance of the Christmas holiday.

Masonic lodge — Beacon Light Masonic Lodge No. 249 conducts meetings every second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. for a Stated Communication. All master masons are cordially and fraternally invited to attend. Call (252) 767-3672 for more information.

Garbage collection — Garbage and brush collection for the City of Henderson will be picked up Wednesday (Dec. 26). Recycle collection will not take place.

 

Wednesday

Stroke support group ­— The Maria Parham Medical Center Stroke Support Group meets the last Wednesday of every month from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Center for Rehab Conference Room of the Brodie Waddill Building at Maria Parham Medical Center. The group is continuing to follow the National Stroke Association Discovery Circles program. Stroke survivors, families, friends and caregivers are invited to attend. Writer’s group — The Franklin County Arts Council Night Writers Group meets every second and fourth Thursday night, at 7 p.m., at Full Circle Coffee Shop in Youngsville for critique and discussion of writing.

Dec. 31

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.
