Today

Farmers market — The Vance County Farmers Market, located at the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, will be open every Wednesday, from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information and to register as a vendor contact Wayne Rowland at (252) 438-8188.

Oxford Farmers market — The Oxford Farmers Market, located on the corner of McClanahan and Lanier streets across from the police station in Oxford, is open from 7 a.m.-noon.

 

Thursday

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Media center summer hours — All 15 local public schools in Vance County will be open each Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., now through Aug. 1.

Perry Library — Perry Library is hosting Father Columba Nnorom in a presentation of his experiences with Nelson Mandela in honor of Mandela’s 95th birthday. The program is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. in the Farm Bureau room. Light refreshments will be provided.

Kittrell Community Watch – Kittrell Community Watch will meet at 7 p.m., at the Kittrell Community House, across the street from the fire station. The meeting will include light refreshments, door prizes, and a presentation on elder abuse from Vance County Social Services. Everyone is welcome.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Stelfanie Williams, president of Vance-Granville Community College. All neighbors are encouraged to attend.

Board of Social Services — The Board of Social Services will meet at 8 a.m. in the Director’s office at 350 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club — The Henderson Business and Professional Women’s Club whill hold its monthly dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the converence room at Maria Parham Medical Center. New members and guests are welcome. For reservations, please call (252) 438-6732.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Art Camp — registration for a beginner’s art camp hosted by Hill’s Music Shoppe ends today. The camp is for children grades 1-4 and lasts from 10 a.m. to noon on July 22-26. Maria Parham — Maria Parham Medical Center is hosting a free lunch and learn program at 11:30 a.m. in the hospital classroom. Gary Smith, MD, primary care practitioner with Four County Primary Care, will be presenting on how to stay healthy during the summer, including tips on proper hydratioin, sun protection and heat safety starting at noon. Harriet Henderson — All former Harriet Henderson Employee’s are invited to a reunion at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Hecks Grove School in Warrenton. Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10 a.m.-noon, Introduction to Art (ages 5-8); and 1-3 p.m., Beginning Piano (ages 6-12). Camps will cost $60 per student, per week. Perry Memorial Library — The Perry Memorial Library will host a presentation from noon to 1:30 p.m. themed “identifying adolescent substance use and effectively involving parents.” The speaker will be Anna Godwin, MS, LCAS, coordinator of the North Carolina Parent Resource Center. Attendees will learn to spot symptons of drug use in adolescents and teach parents about their role in substance abuse prevention. You may bring lunch for the event. Registration is required.

Expungements and Certificates of Relief Clinic – A clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library that will

provide general information about barriers to employment and benefits that arise when a person has a criminal record. Legal Aid advocates will work with individuals after the presentation. The free clinic is co-sponsored by the Henderson Human Relations Commission and Greater Little Zion Holy Church and is open to the public. No registration is required.

Humane Society — The Humane society of Granville County will host a microchip clinic from 9 a.m. to noon at Southern States in Oxford. Microchips are $20 each and a lifetime registration is included.

The Humane Society will also be collecting pet food donations for the pet food pantry, a program designed to help keep pets in their homes. Call (919) 691-9114 for assistance.

 

July 29

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.
