Dec. 6


Henderson Shrine Club — The Henderson Shrine Club meets today at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. All members and visiting Nobles are invited to attend. The monthly meeting is conducted on the first Thursday of each month.
Christmas event — A free Christmas event, Historic Christmas Cheer, will take place at Person Place, Louisburg, at 4 p.m. Students from across Franklin County will conduct a tree trimming with handmade ornaments and sing carols. Hot apple cider will be served. The Person Place Preservation Society (personplace.org) and Food Lion of Louisburg are sponsoring this event.
Candlelight vigil — Kerr Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center will be conducting a candlelight vigil today, at 6:30 p.m., for all of its deceased residents and staff. All family members and friends are invited to attend. Call Pat Pegram for more information at (252) 492-7021.
Warren County Senior Democrats — On Dec. 6, at 1 p.m., the Warren County Senior Democrats will meet at the Warren County Senior Center for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting (which takes place on the first Thursday of each month). They will be reviewing both Federal and State election results and their potential effects. All Democrats of any age are welcome to attend and participate.
Community band — The Vance-Granville Community Band will take the stage for its fifth annual holiday concert today, at 7 p.m., in the college’s civic center at the school’s main campus. Admission is free. The band has selected a program that includes traditional Christmas carols and holiday favorites. In addition to seasonal music, the ensemble has arranged a medley of pieces by Mozart and will perform a John Philip Sousa march. For more information, call Jason Pulley at (252) 213-1826.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.
Christmas concert — Christmas with The Embers, a family concert, will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. Ticket information is available by calling the chamber at (252) 438-8414 or by emailing info@hendersonvance.org.
American Legion — The American Legion Post 60 will hold its regularly monthly meeting today, at 6:30 p.m., in the Legion Hut. All members are requested to attend.
Lunch & Learn — Dr. Mark Dubinski with Carolina GI Associates; Dr. Bob Noel, with Northern Carolina Surgical Associates; and Alexis Edwards, RN and coordinator for The Heartburn Treatment Center at Maria Parham Medical Center, will speak today during the next Lunch & Learn session at the hospital. The title of the program will be “GERD: Not as Funny as It Sounds.” A lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. in the hospital classroom, followed by the presentation at noon, and ending with a question and answer session. Handouts and giveaways will be presented at that time. The event and the meal are free but potential attendees should RSVP with Jeannie by calling her at (252) 436-1401 by Thursday at 2 p.m.
Seasonal flu clinics — Granville-Vance District Health Departments will conduct flu clinics on Friday afternoons, from 1-4 p.m. The cost of the flu vaccine is $35, or $55 for the higher dose flu vaccine recommended by the Centers or Disease Control and Prevention to provide better protection to individuals 65 years of age and older. Medicare Part B (red, white, and blue card) and Medicaid, as well as Blue Cross Blue Shield and Wellpath will be accepted for immunizations. Attendees should bring their insurance card, and wear short sleeves so that clinic personnel may serve the public as efficiently as possible. Those individuals with private Medicare, such as Humana or Premier, will need to go to their primary care doctor because those providers will not reimburse the department. Some children ages six months through 18 years of age may qualify to receive the flu vaccine at no cost. The health department will also be offering the pneumonia vaccine to those who are over age 65, and to those under age 65 who have chronic illnesses. The cost of the pneumonia vaccine is $95.

 

Dec. 8


Christmas parade — The Grassy Creek Christmas Parade will take place Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., at Grassy Creek Baptist Church on Grassy Creek/Virginia Road near Kerr Lake. The parade will feature religious-themed floats as well as other unusual floats, an extensive line of vintage cars, tractors, marching bands, horseback riders and fire trucks. Hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries will be available. Entry fees for the parade are only $5 and participants may be awarded cash prizes.
National Guard reunion — The Henderson and Warrenton National Guard 505th Engineer will hold a reunion today, at 6:30 p.m., at the Golden Corral on Dabney Drive. All former members and spouses are invited to come out.
Gala — The Gala at the Manor will take place at Hudson Manor House, from 4-7 p.m. Art will be on display and food will served. Attendance is $6 per or $10 for two tickets. City council — A regular Henderson City Council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Henderson City Council Chambers at the City Municipal Building, 134 Rose Ave., Henderson.
DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson.
LAC support group — The Abria’s Chase Foundation, Inc. has established LAC (Loss of a Child), a support group for parents who have lost children. The group will meet on the second Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at Maria Parham Medical Center, the group will meet on the second Monday of each month. The LAC Support Group treats grief as a process, provides a listening ear and shares words of encouragement; people who have suffered such loss should embrace each other in the knowledge that they are not alone. Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday from 1-3 p.m. in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.
