Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

Planning board — The Henderson Planning Board will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Henderson City Council Chambers.

 

Tuesday

Zoning board — The Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustment will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Henderson City Council Chambers.

Vendor registration deadline — Vendors must register by today to set up during the July 4th Parade and Festival in Wise. Call Kim St. Sing at (252) 456-9004 to do so.

Parade entry deadline — Entries for the July 4th Parade and Festival in Wise may be made by calling Bruce Perkinson at (252) 432-5307 no later than today. Motorcycles, dirt bikes and four-wheelers will not be permitted.

Media center summer hours — All 15 local public schools in Vance County will be open each Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., now through Aug. 1.

 

Wednesday

American Legion — The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for the “Stand Up for America” event, to be held at the Old Franklin High School Stadium. Admission is $1 per person (except for children under 5, who may attend for free). The parade begins at 10 a.m. There will be fireworks displays and food will be available. Attractions will include live music, face painting, a veterans recognition ceremony and bouncy house.

Farmers market — The Vance County Farmers Market, located at the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, will be open every Wednesday, from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information and to register as a vendor contact Wayne Rowland at (252) 438-8188.

Oxford Farmers market — The Oxford Farmers Market, located on the corner of McClanahan and Lanier streets across from the police station in Oxford, is open from 7 a.m.-noon.

 

Thursday

Cancellation — The Henderson Shrine Club normally conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. However, due to the Fourth of July, the meeting will not take place this month.

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Upcoming family reunion — The annual Paschall family reunion will be held at the Drewry Volunteer Fire Station building in Drewry. Descendants, as well as relatives and friends, of Robert William and Lucy P. Paschall are invited to attend. Those attending should bring a covered dish; lunch will be served at noon. Closing — Henderson City Hall will be closed in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

Fourth of July — At Lake Rogers on N.C. 56 in Creedmoor, a Fourth of July celebration will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Attractions will include a cake baking contest and live music. Hot dogs and beverages will be available. Call Eleanor Fowler at (919) 528-0506.

Parade/festival — The July 4th Parade and Festival in Wise starts at 10 a.m., with the lineup starting at 9 a.m. on the south end of the community.

Friday

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Cancellation — Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the American Legion Post No. 60 has cancelled its monthly meeting for July.

ABC workshop — The Responsible Alcohol Seller/Server Program workshop, from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m., at the Vance County ABC Board, 874 S. Beckford Drive, Henderson. To register, search abc.nc.gov/education/rasp. This will be the first of two sessions.

 

Saturday

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. Monday

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10 a.m.-noon, Introduction to Art (ages 5-8); 10 a.m.-noon, Beginning Drum Set (ages 6-13); 1-3 p.m., Beginning/Intermediate Flute (ages 9-16); 1-3 p.m., Beginning Voice (ages 6-12); and 1-3 p.m., Beginning Drum Set (ages 6-13). Camps will cost $60 per student, per week. They will all be held at 1100 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids. To register, call (252) 678-4954 or send an email to themusicschoolofroanokerapids@gmail.com. This will be week three of a five-week set.

 

July 9

Mental health plan — The Cardinal Innovations/Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton. Cruise in — This month’s installment of Tar River Cruizers’ monthly Cruise Ins is scheduled for today. These events take place on the second Saturday of each month between March and October in the Lowes/Staples parking lot from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can look forward to old cars, oldies music, good food, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, lots of fun and good fellowship.
