Farmers market — The Vance County Farmers Market, located at the Henderson Family YMCA, 380 Ruin Creek Road, will be open every Wednesday, from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information and to register as a vendor contact Wayne Rowland at (252) 438-8188.

 

Thursday

Chess club — The Henderson/Vance Chess Club, affiliated with the U.S. Chess Federation, meets at First United Methodist Church each Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. All are welcome, adults and youths, novice or experienced. Veterans symposium — The civic center at Vance-Granville Community College’s main campus, 200 Community College Road, Henderson, will be the site for the Female Veterans Symposium 2013 “Care After Trauma” from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Veterans from Franklin, Vance, Warren and Granville counties are encouraged to attend this free event. All attendees should bring their DD-214, discharge papers and resumes to the event. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Board of education — The Granville County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the Board of Education Administrative Offices, 101 Delacroix St., Oxford, to close out the fiscal year. A brief closed session for personnel/attorney-client privilege will follow.

Weight loss group — TOWN (Take Off Weight Now), a non-profit weight loss group, will meet at Aycock Recreation Center at 11:30 a.m.

Sign-up deadline — Today is the last day to reserve space in the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce 2013-2014 Business Directory. Those joining the chamber will receive a 10 percent discount on their ads. Non-members will pay an additional 10 percent for each ad. Contact Becky K. Warren County Farmers Market — The Warren County Farmers Market is open today, from 8 a.m.-noon, in the BB&T parking lot, at the corner of East Macon and Bragg streets, in Warrenton.

Dedication — The Franklin County Arts Council will dedicate the Quilt Trails of the Tar River at the Bunn Depot on Railroad Street in Bunn in conjunction with the town’s centennial celebration. The festivities will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with the official ribbon cutting taking place at 11 a.m. Activities will include: a quilting bee, a corn hole tournament, sack races, a tug of war and other games, music, food, arts and crafts vendors. Bluegrass musicians are invited to perform.

Microchip clinic/pet food collections — The Human Society of Granville County is sponsoring a microchip clinic, from 9 a.m.-noon, at the Southern States location in Oxford. Microchips for pets will be sold for only $20 each (which includes a lifetime registration). Donations of pet food for the society’s pet food pantry will also be accepted. Community dance — The Epsom Country Club will sponsor a community dance, 7:30-10:30 p.m., featuring the Cross Creek Band. This particular dance will be a luau. All senior citizens are welcome to attend. For more information and directions, contact Curtis Strickland at (252) 492-6834.

Chicken dinners — The Educational Council of the Memorial Forest will sell chicken dinners (at $7 per plate) at the Hecks Grove Community Center. U.S. 401 South, beginning at 11 a.m. The menu will consist of fried chicken, string beans, potato salad, cake and soda/water. Homemade cakes and pies will also be sold.

 

Monday

Knitting club — Perry Memorial Library is now offering a place every other Monday, from 1-3 p.m., in the board room for knitting, crocheting, and other “crafts involving strings and yarn.” This is a free program, sponsored by the library. The public is welcome to work on their own crafts or to simply come and learn.

 

Tuesday

Adult fellowship — An adult fellowship group meets every Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at the Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Ave., Henderson. Breakfast will be served to attendees on the last Tuesday of the month, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (252) 438-7107.

 

July 4

Cancellation — The Henderson Shrine Club normally conducts its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of every month at the Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 229, 401 Brodie Road, in Henderson. However, due to the Fourth of July, the meeting will not take place this month.

Music jam/open mic — Franklin County Arts Council Student Arts Council will be hosting a music jam and open mic every first Saturday at Common Grounds Coffee House in Bunn. Everyone — experienced and novice, young and old — are invited to bring their instruments and voices. Open mic will be available for poets and spoken word artists as well. July 8

DAV — The Vance County Chapter 97 of the DAV will meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings take place at the Vance County Senior Center, 126 S. Garnett St., Henderson. All members are encouraged to attend.

Music, arts camps — Music and arts camps continue this week at the Music School of Roanoke Rapids at 1100 Roanoke Rapids. This week (today-Friday), the following courses will be offered — 10 a.m.-noon, Introduction to Art (ages 5-8); 10 a.m.-noon, Beginning Drum Set (ages 6-13); 1-3 p.m., Beginning/Intermediate Flute (ages 9-16); 1-3 p.m., Beginning Voice (ages 6-12); and 1-3 p.m., Beginning Drum Set (ages 6-13). Mental health plan — The Cardinal Innovations/Five County Community Operations Center’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Consumers may attend these meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Vance-Granville Community College Warren campus, 210 Ridgeway St., Bldg. 4, Room W432, Warrenton.
