Editorial: Everybody pays now
To the editor:
For 238 years we have been taught that “imposing taxes without consent” was one of a “long train of abuses and usurpations” that forced our independence from a tyrannical government.
What should we call the $203,000 of all Vance County taxpayers’ money to be used to pay the loan for the County’s water system?
From January until May 2008, then Chairman Danny Wright repeatedly said in public that if 80 percent of the county property owners, excluding city and extra-territorial jurisdiction property owners, commit to buying county water then the USDA will loan the money to build the system. Starting July 1, the county must begin to repay the loan for a partially built water system that only 30 percent of the county’s property owners are committed.
On June 23, the Vance County board of commissioners being of one mind will approve a budget that moves $203,000 from the general fund (everyone’s tax dollars) to the county water fund. The principle and interest payments to the USDA are paid from the county water fund.
Has Vance County’s governing body imposed the use of all taxpayers’ money, without consent, to repay a load for something most of the county’s taxpayers already pay the City of Henderson?
Happy birthday, America.
